Rifles for next deer season
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:40:48 AM »
Last year is the first year since I can remember that I didn't kill a deer.   :'(  Ever time I open my freezer I vow that will not happen again!  At least not because of my shooting ability!  :(  So I decided to practice shooting left handed using the rifles I would hunt with next year.

To practice in the basement, I have to use pistol calibers.  Most noteably 38, 44 and 45.

So my 357 Max and 45 Colt top the list!   ;)  I'll practice with the Maxie and irons until I'm comfortable shooting from the wrong side.  Then I'll shoot the 45 Colt which already has a scope mounted.  I don't think I'll take a chance hunting without a scope anymore.   :-\

For scope use I added a comb pad to the 45's carbine stock.  I found I don't really like the one I have, but there are others to try and I'll need 2.  :D

One of the other Handis in the lineup is my 25-06.  I carried it last year and really like the cartridge.  And finally, the 510 Sharps Express if I can get a decent load worked up!   ::)

Additionally I'm gonna carry along my M-99A 308 'cause...  :-\  well just because!   ;D

I was doing the same thing last night.  Thinking about next deer seasons rifles not shooting in the basement.  I think I am going to use the 50 AK because... well just because.  Then I think I will kill one with my maxi since I didn't last year.  If that hasn't quelled the blood-lust from the system I think I will shoot one with the .445 again, just because.  I figure at this rate in 6 years at 3 to 4 deer per year I will have shot one with each handi I have.  The only problem with that logic is that I keep buying more handis.  Picked up a .308 yesterday so that is already making me look at year 7.  Tough problem to have and hanging out on here with you guys only makes it worse.  ;D
Handis: .17 mach2 (x2), .22 lr, 22 hornet, .22 jet, .223, .243, .270, .280, .357 max (x2), 35 remington, 35 whelen, 45-70, 445sm, 30-30, 410, 500 S&W, 50 AK

Here we go again Richard.  I donno.  Last year, I almost got skunked, but lucked out toward the end of ML.  A .45 451 gr. XTP out of the .50 Huntsman at a chippie 35 yards.  I passed on a head/neck cause the deer was skittish.  He heard the hammer come back.  Took a boiler room shot.  It surprised me.  DRT, but fell back toward me???  I'm proud of myself....I even did it legally...Tripple Seven instead of smokeless.  I've got to admit, I was sorely tempted to use IMR 3031 or something similar with the "not to to be mentioned" breech plug.

This year, it'll be the .38-55 first.  Gotta get a deer with that for Tim.  The .356/.358 is next for George and then probably the .45LC and Maxi cause I wanna do it.  Same old problem...too many rifles....too few tags.  I haven't even thought about the other Handis, .30-30, .308, .445, etc.  I'd like, some day, to take one with the .32-20 as CW did last fall and one with the .357 Blackhawk from the tree stand, etc. etc. etc.  Same old problem...too short a season, not enough tags.

Richard, get one for me with one of your shoulder busters.  I wanna see the exit hole :o

I will again spend most of the year with a bow in my hand... both for early deer and moose (all dozen of my bull moose have been taken with archery gear) but plan on breaking-in my walnut/cocobolo mannlicher .44 Mag on a swamp buck later in the season and will use a rosewood mannlicher in 7mm-08 to bag a pair of flat tops in the doe only season. I will be using a .308/.35 W combo gun on our early bear hunt.

Bow season opens a couple a weeks before ML season which opens a couple a weeks before rifle season!  Since I can't shoot my compounds I want to limber up my old Bear Kodiak Magnum this year!   :o

Guess I need to set up a few hay bales in my back yard while I'm at it...  :-\

Well to increase your pain... we lube up the Bear Kodiak Mags on turkeys in the spring before the September moose bow season... but for moose I use a Hoyt compound... Fred Bear is an icon and was a hero of mine as a lad... I have a number of classic Fred Bear recurves.

I plan on breaking in my .223 and my .243 then taking out my new 20 gauge shorty. Other than that I'm in the process of gettin a extra 20 gauge barrel I have cut down to 18 inches and threaded for a choke and gettin a turkey with it. And ill break out my hoyt pro hunter for archery season in the fall. I have a few old recurves 2 are bear Kodak hunters an I like them but my hoyt is my baby.
