Winchester is again offering its Model 71, based on 75th anniversary a year or so back, but if the .348 was so unpopular (as well as obsolete), why not offer the true pistol grip stock and beavertail fore end, shotgun style butt-plate as well as button magazines and ramped sights on the slightly more popular Model 1886 in 45-70, Model 1892 in 45LC and Model 1894 in 30-30? I guess the former might really be a Model 71 in 45-70 caliber, and the later a Model 55 or 64 equivalent? Were not these 'improvements' the apex of lever actions?
