Ruger version of the T/C Contender single shot
« on: March 12, 2013, 04:15:18 PM »
I know, I know.  Just let me dream:
Since it is pretty much unknown what will happen with the TC contender at the hand of S&W, I would love to move on ans see Ruger make their single shot version pistol/rifles with interchangeable barrels and a short frame (17 cal to 308 win cal) and a long version 3006 to whatever.
What do you think?

I'd much rather see them take over Competitor.  LOTS more chambering choices in a great platform.

They've been around for quite a while and have a small following but just never took off in mainstream market.  It is a niche that's not popular now with everything needing to be polymer, black and semi-auto to get a lot of attention.    These are amazingly accurate and well...you pick your chambering among hundreds of choices.  Have one with barrels in .357 max and 5mm/22lr.

Yep - Cannon (rotary) breeched single-shot. Give the breech a twist to expose the rear of the chamber.

To me it seems that the day of the single shot pistol is over, or almost so. Handgun silhouette fueled the need for many shooters but as the game fizzled so did sales for Contenders, etc. I wouldn't expect anyone to spend much R & D money on a new single shot pistol.

Ruger at one time did produce the Hawkeye pistol which looked like a revolver except the breech block swung out to reveal the chamber. It was chambered for the 256 Winchester cartridge. I'm sure all we old timers remember this one. Prices for this particular model had been very high but I haven't seen any advertised in a long time. They also weren't a very popular item making me think that Ruger wouldn't bother going there again.

I would like to see them come out with some thing like the Handi Rifle but better. It would look more like a Savage 219 , have a modular trigger/fire control like there Security Six with the transfer bar making it easy to take a part to clean and tune the trigger. It would have barrels that interchange without having to be fitted. It could have a frame that would handel rim fire up to hand gun calibers plus rifle rounds like .223/7.62-39 and 30-30 and a bigger frame for the larger rounds. The smaller frame guns should be no more then six pounds. Some thing like a lite .223 with a 22in" barrel or a .357max with a lite 20in" with sight's and scope mount or a 7.62-39 the same lengths realy would be a handi rifle.

With Bill gone, the shift has been tactical and self defense. Many a lesson was learned by Contenders being hot rodded and blow apart which i believe is why the G2 came to be.. As mentioned before, silhouette shooting fueled sales for close to two decades but that sport is a shadow of itself now.
The #3 was dropped and there are rumors that the #1 is headed the same direction so anew single shot rifle is doubtful. I believe if its not made of black plastic today, Ruger isn't interested.
There is still plenty of custom barrels available for the Contender and companies like MGM in my opinion, supply a better product than T/C did.

Opinions on this certainly vary.   TC's decreasing annual profit didn't have anything to do with IHMSA.   I don't see the single-shot specialty pistol as ever going away regardless of where IHMSA goes.   They have proven themselves in spades for hunting for near 5 decades, a far bigger market than IHMSA now days, they can match rifles in accuracy/range, and you can add greater versatility to them for lower cost.  No wheel needs to be reinvented with R&D, there are several well proven designs to build from.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Called it the Ruger Hawkeye if I remember.

A fellow brought in a 10-22 the other day to get a scope mounted and sighted in. It was more like a pattern than a group. It was brand new, bought the same day. I put a bore scope down it and could clearly see why. At this point it's akin to beating a dead horse. They need to revamp the tooling for the 10-22 and 77  instead of putting lipstick on them for the tacticool market. I surely wouldn't want to buy a changebarrel system from them when they can't seem to get it together on products that they have been doing for decades.
