I broke one of the reloading laws today

We finally had low wind today and I had been dying to sight in a new scope on my varmint rig. I had also loaded several new loads/bullets and shot through many before I found a load the rifle liked. My mistake is that I failed to log the load information.  I saved a round so that I could pull the bullet and weigh both it and the powder.  Glad I can recognize Varget easily. I felt like a real idiot.  The attached photo is a 5 shot group - not 4 shot, and no, the quarter isn't hiding the 5th shot.  :)

I've been hand loading for about 5 or 6 years now - when I fist started I logged everything, heck even took a scientific approach to working up loads using the ladder method, numbering each cartridge, etc.  I really enjoy reloading and at times I think I must just get into a zone or something and forget simple things like logging my progress.  Regarding age... well, I'm half way between 50-60 so senility may be creeping it's way in.

That is a good group. Is that 223? You have to tell us the rifle, bullet and caliber, that's another rule!  8)

Oldshooter....

Rifle: Savage Model 10 Predator Hunter
Scope: Nikon Coyote Special
Caliber: .223
Bullet: Hornady 60 grn. V-Max
Powder: Varget 26 grns.

I was smart enough to log this after I pulled a bullet and weighed powder.  What saddens me is that I have several boxes of different bullets in the 55 grn weight, a box of 69 grain matchkings and a box of 50 grn. bullets.  I only have about 15 of the 60 grain. bullets left. I'll likely have to wait a while before I can find more of the 60s.

Ain't it always the way it works , you find a bullet you / your gun likes and you are short of em. And times like these  makes it all the more problematic.

Yeah, it's been tough getting components.  I'm good with large and small rifle primers right now but not so much with pistol primers. I've been buying some powder from my local GS - he has not raised his prices but he has always been on the high side anyway.  He knows me by name so he is pretty straight with me. I've tried to buy small pistol primers anywhere I can but most gun shops in the area are either out or they want $5.50 - 6.00 a hundred. Forget buying 1K. It saddens me because a year ago I bought primers for under $20 per thousand.  I'm completely out of some bullets and can't seem to find any - unless I would be willing to pay 'stupid' money for them.  Next week is Spring Break and my two boys will be home from college for a few days - we always look forward to shooting while they are home and we can easily go through 1K rounds when they are home - that will put a serious dent in my stash. Typically that's not a problem but with the current situation I'm reluctant to burn through what I have left on hand.

You poor guy.  Why don't you take up casting?  Problem is you may need another platform for that.  Casting means endless supply of great bullets.  Far better than any condom bullet.

Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.

Great group! Ive been down that road, lost logs or didn't write it down.  Felt like kicking myself for it. Lol.  I've gotten my reloading room more organized here lately so i dont get lost in it and now make myself log everything I do.  My wife thinks Im crazy, but it keeps me out of her hair and down in my reloading so she's cool with it  ;D.

Hairy - it's interesting that you bring up the subject of casting as just this past week I started to seriously look into what would be required for me to start making my own bullets.  I have used cast bullets in pistols but never in a rifle.  I do have a couple of bolt guns that would probably shoot cast well, one chambered in .303 British and another in 30.06. Not sure if my levergun would shoot cast very well (Marlin) and I have a Handi-rifle in 45/70, not sure about that one either.  Anyway, I have a lot more research to do before I jump into casting.

One thing to watch out for is information overload.  There are sites out there who provide a lot of information, but more doesn't mean good.  Remember always, quality over quantity.  LBT 4-cavities are quality, though.  That is an exception.  You can make the best possible bullet for any of the above guns on demand.  Make'm today, load'em tomorrow.  Better performance, easier to obtain bullets and money savings!  Start with one rifle, tell us what you want to do with it and we will all chime in.  Then you can do it yourself and see who was right.  Don't believe anybody, even me.  Prove it to yourself.  I proved all of the above to myself.
