Are stainless handi barrels really stainless or plated

This may be a dumb question, but are the stainless shotgun barrels really stainless all the way through or are they plated?  I have heard that this might matter if trying to thread it for chokes, with a stainless barrel likely to damage the tap.

Bright shotguns barrels are matte or electroless nickel as stated on their website, there are stainless rifle barrels tho, the SS 45-70 Ultra Hunter has a stainless frame as well, all others have matte nickel frames.

Thanks Tim.  I have a handi combo, 30-30 and 20 gauge.  Manufacture date is '84.  Both bright barrels.  So was it the same then?   The rifle barrel is stainless and the shotgun barrel is matte or nickel?

It has an electroless nickel frame and barrels.
