Finally.....some range time...2 days!!!!!
« on: March 15, 2013, 11:06:58 AM »
Ahhhh finally the weather has broken enough to actually get some trigger time.  Got to shoot 2 days, and 2 rifles Ive just started loading for, 300win mag and 17 hornet, plus the ever faithful 30-06.  Once I get all the numbers crunched and all that Ill post my results...feels good to be squeezing the trigger again

I hear ya - I got out on Wed and again yesterday.  Felt really good to sail a few rounds down range.

300 win mag ouch, that's the reason I got a led sled. Maybe I'm a sissy but shooting that rifle from the bench hurts. Don't even notice it in the field but the bench used to make me easily satisfied with the groups. With the led sled and weights its like a 223.  Look forward to your future posts on results.

I've always had interest in 300 win. but have never owned one - I believe that it can be a flexible round, loaded from mild to hot.  I still have a few bucket list guns to obtain before I would buy a 300 win. - by the time I get to owning one I'll probably be too old to shoot it.

 Hey guys,
Sorry its taken so long, but I finally got everything done, working for a living really puts a damper on my play time.... :P
Old Shooter, they can call me a sissy too, because the Lead Sled is wonderful.  Had recently gotten one and I just used it with the 300.  Hard for me to put 20-25rds through bigger guns like that off the bench.

Starting off with the 17hornet:  All loads used new Hornady cases, Win SR primers, and 20gr Vmax, and groups are 3 shots at 100yds
Started out with H110 and Lil Gun,
Not alot to be said with H110, it didnt fill the case very well and didnt yield the vel I was looking for.  Started at 8.0gr and worked up to 8.6, (6rds each charge).  Groups ranged from 1.25in down to .623.(this group seemed to be a fluke)  with my best groups coming from 8.6gr but vel was down in the low 3's
Lil Gun was a more pleasing in velocity and accuracy.  Started out with 9.5gr and went to 9.9gr.  My best and most consisent accuracy was had with 9.7gr and both groups were in the .7s and vel averaged 3558.  My best vel came at 9.9 with speeds in the 3740 range but I was starting to see pressure signs.  Looks like Im gonna be staying in the 9.7ish range.
Rifle is a blast to shoot, cant wait to run some more down the pipe.

Another new one for me is the 300win.
I started out with new Rem cases, CCI LR Mag Primers, and 180gr Nosler B-tips
Started with IMR 7828 and ranged from 74.0gr to 77.0gr.  Had groups in the .8s with 74.0 with velocities in the 2850 range, but as velocities went up my groups opened up significantly.

I then tried RE-22 with charges from 74.0-76.0 and got more velocity with somewhat better groups.  I had loads of 75 and 76gr that kept groups in the 3/4" range with vel right at 3000.  Looks like this is about where Ill keep things. The lead sled is really nice for load development.

And finally I got my 30-06 on paper and through the chrono.  Had a couple loads Ive used in previous years but never knew what kind of speed I was getting

Had a 125gr Nos Btip Load I used a few years back pushed by 53.0gr of IMR 4064 and Id gotten really good accuracy out of it.  I was pleasantly suprised with my first 3 shots.  My vel was in the 2850 range, not as fast as I had thought it would be but the accuracy was really nice

And my last load with the 30-06 was 168gr SMK with 58.5gr of H4831. Velocity was down in the 2500 range. Having a chrono really makes a world of difference reloading.

Heres are some pics
1st group is 75.0gr RE-22 out of the 300
2nd group is 125btip out of 30-06
3rd group is 168SMK out of 30-06
