Outside neck turning and powder for .243?
« on: March 17, 2013, 06:27:52 AM »
Does anyone outside neck turn their brass anymore. I have always turned any brass .243 and smaller. Also, everyone used to use IMR 4895 for the .243. As I haven't loaded for the .243 for several years, is this still the prefered powder. There are a lot of new powders out since I reloaded a lot. Thanks, Don

All good powders. I have been really happy using Varget the last couple years works great with light loads below 90 grains.

In my oppenion neck turnning brass for a factory chamber is not only a waist of time but will shorten the life of the brass. I have several custom rifles that are tight necked and require neck turnning and I like to get .002 neck expanation. With that small amount of working the brass last for a long time. I tried turnning some for a factory chamber 1 time, I got split neck in 2 or 3 loadings with no improvement in accuracy.

I agree with Catfish. Most factory chambers are so sloppy that taking anything off of the neck usually takes away from accuracy. None of the factory guns are even close to being a TNT type chamber so there's no need for it.
In regards to powder, I've used everything from IMR4198 to H4831 with great results. The 243 is fairly easy to get get decent accuracy results with a wide variety of components. My favorite hunting load uses a Speer 90gr on top of a near max load of IMR4320. Considering H4895 is in the ballpark, it should work as good as anything.

I have some tight neck rifles in my 6mm neck dia is .262 and 22 cal neck dia is .244 and even in tight neck rifles they may not all like the same neck tension.  In a factory chamber what you do is mike high low thickness in various location around the neck and turn neck to the low and you don't worry about neck clearance.    It's same as custom you can adjust neck tension with bushing dies.

In a factory rifle not everything is concentric to the center of bore and they may have more  on that max side on the chamber vs some that may be on the min so it's always a gamble if you would see any improvement.

My 243 I like IMR-4350 and H-4350 in the 243AI I'm shooting IMR-4007ssc both have 1/10 twist barrels.

I've got 2 rifle's that require outside neck turning, a .219 Donaldson Wasp, and a 6mm AI. Real pain in the butt. If you don't need to, and your reloads fit in the chamber, don't do it. gypsyman

I have had really good luck with IMR 4350 for a 100 gr. bullet in .243. I have an old Rem. 788 that is a real tack driver, as far as that goes every 788 in any caliber I have ever shot is a real winner. They must be good, because people are asking an arm and a leg for them nowadays. Sorry, I got off track . I love those 788's. I have a buddy that has had real good luck using IMR 4831 in a .243. But, as I stated before IMO , IMR 4350 is hard to beat.

I have used H4831, WW785, IMR4350, WMR, and H414 with success in the last 35 years.  Current favorite powder for 80 to 100 grain bullets is H414 because it produces good accuracy, and I have a good supply of it.  I would have no problem using 100 grain bullets with H414 powder for hunting, but I set aside 3 boxes of loads with WMR and the Speer 105 grain bullets for deer hunting only.  Both items have been discontinued.

H414 is my first choice with 80 grain bullets.
