Slow Rust Blued my old 12Ga barrel
« on: March 17, 2013, 08:03:08 AM »
Last year I picked up a SB1 12 Ga for $50 at the local pawn shop, the only thing wrong with it was on the reciever the blue had been worn off. Almost like someone had tried to remove it. So last week I ordered some Laural Mountain Barrel Brown and tried my hand at rust bluing the barrel.

I had to build a 30" long tank to boil it in.

After the 4th round of Rusting, Boiling and Carding, this is what it looked like.

Here is a side by side, before, during, after.

Nice work!! I had excellent results with Belgian Blue on my octagon H&R barrels, same process, made my water tank out of galvanized gutter, used my old gas BBQ for heat.  ;)

Good job.  I did an old muzzle loader the same way a while back.  It will hold up much better than any cold blue as you have real bluing.  It's not as hard work as they make it out to be.  It only takes about 30 minutes a day over 5 or 6 days to get good results.  I built a similar tank and used my double fryer outside to boil it on.

Looks very nice.  Are you going to refinish the receiver and if so what process would you use?

Super job! :o   Looks very nice. :D
I've used Laurel Mountain's browning soulution to "brown" lots of muzzleloader barrels with great success.  But until now, I had only read about getting "blued" results with the same product.  You've really peaked my interest in doing some "blued" barrels.  I would also expect what you've done to be much more durable than a cold blue process, and looks better too. ;) :)

Thanks everybody! The case hardening on the frame is still in good condition, the only other thing wrong with it is a few rub marks on the forend.

I had thoughts of selling this one when I started, but now after all this work, and how happy I am with the results I think I will keep it. I am keeping an eye out for more rusty guns though, I had fun doing this one, and the end product is very satisfying.
