What does everyone use for tumbler media?

Curious as to what anyone here uses.

I've been using corn cob mostly. But i got an idea earlier, what about pistachio shells? I eat alot of pistachios, think i'll try grinding some up and seeing how they work.

Anyone else use any home mix?

have several  5 gallon buckets of walnut
hull from a good while back that were
destined for the dumpster.
price was right, so that's what i've
been using.

never tried anything else except c. cob.
i've had this w. hull a long time and
it will probably be enough to last me
until i'm too old and feeble to load.
it gets a squirt of polish when it starts
to get tired and tossed when too dirty to use.
i would think that any type of nut hull or
quantity of similar small particles would do
the job of cleaning with a dash of polish.
i see the thing now is these stainless
steel "needles" that dash around and
knock grime and mung off the cases.
when i run out of my stash, maybe they'll
have something that is effortless and
really inexpensive. (inexpensive- that's a joke ! !)

I thought I had a bargain when I bought Harbor Freight's walnut media, until I ran it side by side against a finer grade obtained by a reloading supply house.  The stuff obtained from reloading outfit was much better.  Too course works slower.  It is because a large grain doesn't do the same work as it would if it were broken down.  Finer media affects more surface area in any given time.

Pistachio shells.  They are too bulky to do any good.  Unless you could grind them up.  But can you grind them down finer than walnut?

I can grind them like fine espresso beans if need be, i'm just curious as to the color they'd impart

i wouldn't think color would matter
as much as cleaning any corrosion
or combustion matter from the casing.
isn't it the polishing compound the
media is treated with that does the
work anyway? brass is harder than organic
media and the w. hull itself doesn't
scratch up or shine the brass on it's
own (as far as i'm aware) in any kind of
reasonable time. i would guess you
could eventually get cases clean with
untreated media, but i wouldn't want to
wait that long.

And that stuff is the same thing, available at most pet stores and alot cheaper then buying Walnut media in a pretty jug at the Sporting goods store

I use a cheap ultrasonic cleaner with Hornady One shot.  Lemon juice and dish detergent also work.  I don't care for tumblers.

I just got Stainless Steel media to use in my tumbler. It lasts for ever. Before that I used Corn Cob in my tumbler and walnut media in my vibrating cleaner.

I can't wait to try lizard litter.  But they can keep the lizard.

For me it's corncob with a dash of Brasso. I use a small barrel tumbler.

I use both corn cob and walnut. Walnut seems to work better if you want a real shinny case and there not to tarnished to begin with. Corn cob cleans  better but doesnt shine as well. I buy both in  bulk at the local feed store for a fraction of what it costs elsewhere. Ive fooled around a bit with white rice too and it works pretty good and can be found in bulk pretty cheap .

If white rice does well i wonder how brown rice would do?

I tried white rice, but did not like it. It takes forever to clean up cases with it.

I use corn cob , tried walnut but it did not do  as well as corn cobe for me.
