Rocket Stove
« on: March 19, 2013, 01:23:56 AM »
I just finished my rocket stove.  It is made with 2" square tube with a 4" inch tube with vermiculite as insulation over top.  It still keeps the ratio of 1:1.5 or 2.  It took less then 4oz of wood to boil 12oz of water in about ten minutes.  Weigh is about four pounds.

Only when you haven't welded in several months.  To be honest it was easy once you get things cut.  The size is 8"x8"x6".  Perfect size for packing.....

you don't mean packing as
in backpacking do you?
a four pounder would be a
chore on the back and that's
four pounds of grub or water
less to have.
looks like a lifetime built
piece of gear though. . . .
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

my backpacking stove burns alcohol and weighs 1.1oz! my wood burning stove is a campbells soup can and three pieces of wire. why would you need a 4 pound stove? this is not an attack,, i am really trying to figure out what the purpose is?

Neat Ron.  8)

Been looking at rocket stove designs myself recently. Never made one. I have a bunch of DIY wood and alcohol stoves, all made from various pop and coffee cans. Yours looks a tad sturdier than any of mine.  ;)

I have gone the can route as well.  Mine never held up more then one year and some didn't hold up more then two weeks.  Four pounds is a lot, I agree, but I lose that much weight after three days on the trail.;D

In the most recent "Mother Earth News", Feb-Mar 2013, page 84-85 (Country Lore: Readers' Tips to live by), there is a simplistic version of a "rocket stove".  It's made from three cans and is supposed to be very efficient, according to the letter.

A first it smokes, then none.  Burns clean.

glad it worked out.
looks like it will last
forever + 2 days.

(the smoke thang was a lil' joke.
ya know, when kicking bird asked
dances with wolves how his pipe
worked " how. . does. .it smoke?"
when one of us in our group complete a
project of any kind, from a new
scoot or especially a firearm,
that's what we ask)

good luck with it

While making one would be fun, this is pretty impressive for $125 + free shipping.  :)

I looked at one and several others.  I built one like that out of a gallon paint can a few years ago.  Cost on mine new one was less then $20 for materials.  Welding time was about an hour.

You must be an expert fabricator. If I tried to build one out of a paint can it wouldn't end up being quite "like that."  ;)

That's funny.  Expert?  Buy to paint cans.  Use a dremel tool to cut the openings.  You will need quite a bit more in materials , such as hinges, rivits, two large soup cans and a grate.  The same idea is there it is just cheaper.
