What our students like to do when not in school.
« on: March 19, 2013, 08:34:37 AM »
I am on my lunch half hour and thought I'd take Kimber up on his challenge of offering positive posts. I teach 6th grade mathematics at a middle school in Wyoming. We have reserved a space on one of our walls in our wing on which we have allowed students (and staff) to place photos of themselves doing the things they like to do when not in school. Most of the photos placed there are of students posing with animals they bagged last fall or trapped this winter, playing football, basketball, etc. Parents, when they come into the school, voice positive comments about the pictures. They make sure (most of them anyway) their children lead a well-rounded lives, keeping them active and out of trouble. It is a privilege for me to be one of their teachers.

Talk about priviledged to be one, I am lucky enough to be a volunteer with a local group of XC ski instructors.  We haven't gotten our photo up from 2013 yet, but the 2012 photo has most of the younger kids. My two are the ones wearing hats.  ;D  (I was behind the camera)

The older kids are in the nordic racing group in a different photo.  This last season we had 160+ kids in programs from ages 4-18.  It makes for some busy winters, but, come summer, we'll be on two wheels.  Between the tag-a-long and her little MTB, my 7yr old has ridden just under 2k miles with me.  My 5yr old has ridden just over half that.

People who start sentences with "Kids today..." often completely overlook the activity level of the kids in my circle of friends- and it's a large circle.  We are generally non-team-sport families.
Just my Awf Hand comments...

GOMERDOG, AWF HAND. Thanks for sharing. Kids brought up hunting and the outdoor sports don't get into near as much trouble as many city kids do. Great posts. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Awf Hand,

That's a great pic. Where are you located?

Both of my daughters Nordic raced in high school and with the Junior Nationals program. One of them raced on the University of Wyoming club team against USSSBA club teams and some NCAA Nordic teams. I think it's what she remembers most about college. It is certainly a great lifelong activity.

My wife and I, and many other volunteers, organize and put on a weekend of high school races each year. Our high school activities director would have no idea how to do it, so parents and other volunteers have to do it. We did it when our girls were in high school and we are still doing it....13 years straight now. It's a lot of work, but very gratifying when high school racers from other Wyoming towns and their parents come up to us afterwards and say "Thank you for all your hard work." They know.

Powderman...Thanks for the kind words.
