hello;

about to buy my 3d handi. the first two were problem children. the 243win had accuracy and fired case ejection issues. the 308win had fired case ejection issues. even sending the rifles back to nef did not solve their problems. sold both.

about to make my last try on a handi rifle. need help in picking the one to buy. all 3 are @ same price and in very good to good condition.

they are a 223rem., 30/30win., and a 30/06.

do reload and have cast bullets for 30+ years for .30cal rifles.

ejecting a fired case is at the top of list with accuracy next. any input would be use full. thanks.

In light of your previous problems, I'd go with the .30-30. It has the best track record for accuracy and trouble free shooting.

I'd go with the .30-30 just because its a all around great cartridge. That and everyone that gets one seems to say there great shooters. Just make sure if your after a rifle that will eject the shells that you don't get an extractor model.

Or the other way around

The year of manufacture should tell you. See the chart in the FAQs. They've only been extractors for a few years. I can't remember exactly when, but Tim will clue us in.

The other thing is if you're already casting .308 bullets, it's a no brainer.

I would go 30-30, I dont know of anyone here who did not love their handi 30-30. I have seen a couple posts about how someone had to tweak something but I think 30-30 in a handi is a very nice gun and extremely trouble free. Most of my higher pressure ejector Handis have stuck a case at least once in the time I have owned them. they are cured now, the extractor conversion fixed a couple very nicely. But my old 30-30 has never had a problem. thejanitor

I'd go 30-30. They stopped making ejectors in 2004 or 2005. As for your extractor problems if you are not polishing the chamber per the instructions in the FAQ AND having clean polished shiny brass your likely going to have issues. Not polishing the chamber and non shiny brass will be a bigger issue with the ejector.

H&R started making extractor barrels in 2004, they didn't quit making ejector barrels on centerfire rifles until about 2007, and have been extractor since 2007ish, the only sure ways to get an extractor is on a factory rifle made since 2008 with a CBA serial number, or simply open the action and listen for the ejector to snap out. As YRU stated, doing the ejector tune and chamber polish usually cures the sticking brass issue with high pressure chamberings, but as Brent said, it doesn't always.... unfortunately. $:-\$

Any year 30-30 would be a good choice, it's a low pressure chambering and has an excellent track record for reliability and accuracy.

Not saying it has anything to do with you, but a number of folks who like to load up on the high end of the data seem to have ejection issues. The extractor overcomes the initial expansion stick but doesnt get the case very far out. As a reloader I dont like searching for my brass and thats fine, some hunters dont care for it.
BTW, you can download a 30-06 to a lesser .30cal. performance, but the 30-30 probably has open sights on it, which may be of value to you? For me the 30-30 is all the 'smallbore express' I need.

Personally I have never had a problem with any of mine ejecting except when I put a chamber adapter in my 30-06 for 7.62x39. Aside from that I have never had a case stick.

+1 on the 30-30. it is the king of cast bullet loads and it is accurate with little problems in the Handi platform.

I agree with the above... Go with the .30/30... I have two and love them both... They are great with cast.

30/30.. I had problems with a .243 and ejection and being "rimless", sometimes on a quick reload the rim would slip past the ejector. With the 30/30, whatever problems ejection may occur, would be mitigated with a true rimmed case. Besides, the 30/30 is a darn nice round..especially when partnered with H&R.

While I am a 30-06 man, I'd advise going with the 30-30. Tried and true Accurracy and ejector.

I'm not too keen on his use of steel wool, no bore guide on the cleaning rod and ignoring all the Soft Scrub/solvent/oil he left on the ejector/extractor.

Get the 30-30. Like the other posters stated, I don't think anyone that ever had a 30-30 had a problem with it. I also have two, and am very happy with both.

Never heard of a .30-30 Handi to have any "issues."

But my favorite [shorter] BG round is the .308.

If your 3rd Handi buy works out to your satisfaction,
buy a .223 bbl barrel via the accessory barrel program.

i never had a 30-30 H&R Handi...but i did have a 30-30 Marlin...it kicked like a Missouri Mule.

that being said.

the 30-06 is, probably, one of the most versatile rounds to be invented and i'm almost certain, unless loaded down, would kick like that Missouri Mule, also...but might be might nice downloaded...

that being said...i think the 30-30 might be a very good selection, too. it may have more versatility in the Handi frame.

That's not the case with a Handi rifle. Recoil is very manageable. Another point to make is the 30-30 hand loaded into a single shot is much more versatile than in a lever gun. Using any one of the many, many pointed 30cal bullets makes the Handi my absolute favorite 30-30. Take the Nosler 125gr NBT for example. That bullet flat out performs! One might be surprised how close it gets to a .308 Win.
