Felt recoil is more than just a function of a cartridge, the stock design is as much or more. I had a Marlin in 444 that was nasty even with 44Mag level loads and it had a bit of recoil pad.

I have a Handi in 30-06 and it doesn't kick any worse than my Rem. Sportsman 78 in '06.  But I think we are wandering off your original question. . .

I have only had experience with one caliber out of the three you listed(30-06)but I would suggest trying any one of them.  I know you have had some bad luck but I since NEF/H&R have been shuffled around, think it matters more WHEN the gun was made rather than what caliber.  ;D

So, no one mentioned 22 hornet, or 357 maxi?  Since having 7 30-30s already might make my favoring 30-30 seem prejudiced.  Just wondering...

The .30 Remington, .32 Winchester and .303 Savage are all nice rounds..but the 30/30 will do about the same job with better availability of ammo, and components
.  ...And since component availability is better, reloading should be a more economical task. If you run out of ammo somewhere near Lower Dogpatch..you would likely have a better chance of finding 30/30 ammo than the others..

Get the 30-30, ream to 30-30AI with the GBO reamer when I mail it back to Tim on monday. You could squeak out a few more fps with the combo of spitzer  bullets and the AI case and still have the reliability of the 30-30. Thats what I just did anyway...

I guess that depends upon what he would use the rifle for..will he really need a few more fps ?  For the above stated reasons, convenience, availability etc.. as long as a standard round will do the job..I'll stick with the standard round.
Certainly if his game is no bigger than whitetail deer & black bear..the 30/30 will do the job comfortably well..

By all means get a standard caliber, no matter what you choose.  You always want ammo you can buy or barrow..

Where is the fun in ammo you can buy or borrow??? JK, nothing wrong with a regular 30-30 at all. Its probably my favorite centerfire cartridge. I was just throwing out another option within the platforms listed.

No disrespect meant.  I just new a guy in college who got a once in a lifetime hunting trip to Alaska.  He takes a wildcat caliber and as he is getting off the float plane, he dumps his ammo bag in the lake ( no ammo to be had).  Had to barrow a strange rifle from the outfitter for the hunt.  Turned out OK though.

I'm looking forward to the range report.  I'd want to get one too.  I don't know why, I already have 2 other .30-30s...

I have 6 30-30's

they are repetitively boring

next time, I'd go for something exotic, like a 30-375SuperLiteAccurateMagnum-DuperUltraCoolKiller!

We know it up here as the 30SLAMDUNK

you can use the same dies as a 30-30, brass is cheap as you can neck UP then Down the 30-30 brass, and I think in a pinch, you can fire them in regular 30-30 chambers.
You can even use the same dies as 30 Remington.

So, you have the WOW factor of the Magnum, with off the shelf components!

The deer will be so scared, they'll hop in the back of the truck for you so whack 'em right there!

I got the newer extractor model .30-30 several years ago.  I use extractors in all my rifles and Ejectors in my shotguns.  My .30-30 has been my almost exclusive deer rifle for four years.  I use a .444 with 1/20"twist for our Primitive season.  This thing has no accuracy problems and with reloading it now has no problems out to 200 yards.  Using a 150 grain Speer Hot-Core spinster loading out to the rifling this thing is much longer then the standard .30-30 and would not be a choice for a lever action at all.  Getting a little over 2400 fps using Reloader 15.  i don't think you will have any regrets about your .30-30 at all.

jp, I'm doing the same 2402 fps with the 168 gr. NBT and RL15 loaded long.  Mines sighted in at 200.  I use it also as a chamber round in my 336 followed by 150 gr. RNFPs with almost the same load in the tube.

There ya go Pete!, a nice high performance spitzer, etc. up the spout in a lever is a fine way to go if you have some open ground around.
