Sika Part II
« on: March 20, 2013, 06:49:49 AM »
My wife and I were hunting our place for Axis during spring break, but I ended up taking a couple Sika.

Excellent! How do these Sika compare to Axis for eating? I would think they are closer to a Fallow in taste/texture, but just wondering. What bullet/ammo did you use again and how far was the shot? Thanks.

Thanks Doc.   RevJim,  I would put the taste up there with Axis.  The spiked one was at 200yds, pretty much level to slightly above me, and the other was 140yds downhill, and moving.   I shot them with a Rem 700 synthetic, 30-06  Remington Corelokt 165 gr.   The spike dropped in his tracks.  The other traveled less than 10 yds.

My favorite venison is Axis deer, with Mountain Muleys, and Corn/Soy Bean foraging whitetail following. Sika sure look pretty, and the bigger one, Dybowski, is high on my bucket list. There just isn't any way a 30.06 and a good 165gr bullet can be "beat", can it? ha One could use that load on just about anything, anywhere. My first experience with a 165gr was the very first Red Box Federals that came out with the 165 Game King, remember those? They not only made my dad's old Rem 742 shoot better ( from 6" 150 CL to 3-4" with the Federals at 100) but I immediately liked how they killed great yet didn't tear up as much as the 150, especially under 65yds (majority of my shots with it then). If I didn't have a gee wiz, "friend of a lifetime" .35 Whelen Improved, I would be right back to a good 30.06 again. As it is, my( "Texas deer rifle ) is now an older Belgium BAR in 270. Nice and heavy for sighting tight in a blind and for showing off in camp, lol. Glad you had a great time.

I like hunting these too, I have been three times now and only connected the first trip. But I was the camera/support guy on the last two trips. I want my wife to get the next one!

This was back in '90 or '91.

That was the first time out for that rifle. (I broke it in right I think en?) Its a 1894 45L Colt. The load was a long time favorite, a 300 Speer SP and a 20+g loading of WW296 with a CCI350.

Its just like the 1894P Marlin in 44Mag accept it don't have the porting and its in a better caliber. ::) ;)

RevJim, I remember those GameKing's.   I never feel under gunned with a 30-06 and 165gr's.   While I'v never hunted large bears,  I just don't think that the 06 takes a back seat to many calibers.

CW,  I love that rifle.  I don't have that caliber, but have the 444P which I have not used in several years.  Might need to take it back out.

Thank you!  I like it too!! ::)

The 444 is a power house! I never had the shorty, But I did own all three variants Marlin had in the full sized gun.

I agree, get it out and enjoy it!
