Price of Ammo.....When U can find it.
« on: March 20, 2013, 02:55:17 PM »
I have been looking for 9mm ammo since I purchased my wifes S&W M&P 9F.  Wow...hard to find here in the Texas Panhandle.  A friend loaned me 200 rounds for her to get used to the firearm before she took the CHG class. With me replacing what I barrowed when I could find it.  Been looking since and haven't had any luck.   Today I found some at lucky gunner.....50 round boxes of PMC for 33.00 a box....ordered 10 boxes.   Wow never thought I would pay that for 9mm 115 FMJ....used to see those for abojut 13.00 a box at Wal-Mart.   When Black Rock here in Borger Texas starts to reload the 9 mm again, He said I could get 1000 rounds of 124 grain FMJ for 300.00 but that will be 8 weeks at least till they can start reloading them.....can't seem to find all the components according to him,  and I believe him...Says he has back ordered 5000 bullets of 124, 147 grains in FMJ and HP, but it is at least 4-6 weeks before they get them if then.  He says primers are hard to get also....and this is from a RELOADING business.  WOW, I will be glad when this settles down if ever.  This is crazy....and I haven't seen any .22's on any shelves in at least 4 months....let alone 9mm or pretty much any other handgun ammo.  I am going to TRY to get the components for ME to reload them...but from the sounds of it....not going to be easy.  I do reload for the 500 Mag and the 480 Ruger....but not for the 9mm or my 10mm.  Guess I am behind the times...I read all that has been said on here and didn't listen....U guys and gals are right.   I am a dunce.....perhaps I will be able to get up to speed eventually.....should have taken to heart what was said on here....ya'll were right.

I would say do it the old fashioned way and reload them. Except Obama caused panic buying and hoarding is also affecting reloading supplies. I figured out after round one of his first scare, and stocked up on all my supplies in Novemember. This year seems even WORSE. Can't hardly even get powder for reloading nowadays.

and what they precipitated, but don't let that
discourage you. all this gilflirted mess will
be over shortly and you can stock accordingly.

unless i absolutely had to, i
would not pay these hyper inflated
prices for any kind of ammo or component.
the only thing that's pinched me is
the total lack of 22lr anywhere.
i've had to cut back on letting my
nephew cut loose, but conserving
ammo isn't a bad lesson anyway.
still have a fair supply for now.

still have a decent supply of fodder for
most of my firearms, a decent stock of
arrows, b.p. and lead for the charcoal
guns, and marbles for the slingshot.

in the interim, i have 1 or 2 or dozen
traps of various kinds. there's always
something edible around somewhere ;)

i put off replacing some of my
.357 mag brass too long.
i did find a pack of starline that
was on the wrong shelf the other day,
and that will do in the interim.

you'll likely want to ramp up on your
brass quantity when the mess subsides.

you need to get at least one bow, or
crossbow if you can't draw a bow, and
several dozen arrows after you get
your tackle needs settled.
arrows are instantly re-usable.
no primer or powder required.

T64, was right there with you just a few months ago. I had ammo, but not enough if say, I could never get any more. I freaked out  :o, to realize how vulnerable we are to a glitch in the supply chain. Kinda opened my eyes to our dependency on grocery stores, the power company, cell phones\comps, fuel too. Nice to feel prepared. Scary to be dependant. Anyways, over a couple months of digging and driving around occasionally, plus plenty of purchases off the GBO classifieds, I'm well prepared to reload enough to last me in the various calibers I shoot. You'll do the same thing. All the stuff is still out there, just a bit harder to find and a LOT more expensive  :-\  j

This was my first shortage too. Things i've learned:

CAST

Keep a rather respectable stock of primers. Used to just be able to drive a mile and pick up some when i needed... now i buy when i can get

Keep a ton of brass around, 100 used to be enough for me

Keep a ton of bullets around

8# jugs of powder shall be the standard

Pick up every piece of brass left lay on the range. If you don't need it you can trade for what you do need

Also, aside from guns, i've also realized how easily this could extend to regular market infrastructure. So this year, we're planting a variety, and enough to get us through the winter

The barter system seems like a good "cut out the middleman" system to me   :D i try to learn how to do everything i can possibly do. Way i see it when the fragile infrastructure breaks and walmart isn't an option, the people who now say "why make it when you can just buy?" Aren't gonna have a clue what to do

I trade back and forth with a member on here that lives close. We usually do our trading in the parking lot of where we decide to meet for Breakfast, or at his house if were headed to the club where he shoots. Also have another member close that we have done a little trading back and forth.
Have 3 dehighdrators(sp) 2 smokers (one small and one large)  Daughter has a dehighdrator, and D I L has a lg smoker. All three familys put in a small garden every year and trade back and forth.
As for shooting stuff have a fairly good stock, and most everything I shoot is cast, along with a couple smoke poles. Even got 2 sling shots with extra bands in a box someplace. ::) A bunch of fishing stuff, and a few diffrent types of traps, so I think I kinda got it covered. Daughter and her husban both shoot and hunt, son would hunt if it came down to it. 13 yr old grand daughter you cant keep out of the boat or off the river bank, and has her own guns, last year went turkey hunting (no luck) but plans on deer hunting this year.

I was in a store the other day and saw boxes of 45 LC for $43.99 each. It made me extremely happy that I reload that caliber and have enough supplies to last a while.

I loaded up on every thing when I first learned Obama and Clinton were the top runners and I checked his past record  and Clinton's on gun stuff.  I was sure any Democrat would win, as people were no longer remembering 911, and how they cheered Bush on.  I load for all but 22Lr and have about 2000 rounds still, I only wish I had bought more at the price I got them for.
I hope some of the money people are spending on this high priced ammo and guns gets put into the fight to keep our 2Nd Amendent in tact.

Has anyone commented on if this 22 thing is also going on in Canada ?
People in gun clubs over in Germany say they are having no trouble getting 22lr .
But they don't know whether or not its still coming from stocked reserves .
About the only American brand they ever used was the cheaper Remington but all 22 there has
always been expensive . But the Russian stuff is reasonable and at its at normal pricing .
France is restrictive but if your lucky enough to have a permit they too are still importing from
Russia with no problems . Its the same with Belgium but they get most of theirs from the Swiss
who roll their own . All of these country's have strict restrictions on the possession of a gun like
a 22 , but there doesn't seem to be any problem getting ammo for them .

Not yet anyway . But there is also not even 5% the amount of shooters there that we have here .
With maybie the exception of Germany who is really big into target shooting .
You can burn up as much as you want as long as you can pay for it and abide by the laws .
And that usually involves being in a gun club where the gun and the ammo stays in that clubs
armory or magazine .

The bottom line is this whole ammo thing that's going on here in this country has shocked a lot
of people even overseas . Especially with the 22 who many feel is the canary in the coal mine
about what's going on here in America . 22lr could be considered the most plentiful round in the
world taking in its civilian use. If allowed the shortage here could disappear over night with imports
takeing up the slack on existing ammunition import licensing ! Especially that which could come in
from country's like the Phillipines or Russia .

You can't say they haven't been shipping in before I've seen Russian and Spanish 22lr being sold
here only a few months ago . That's the same with that horrible cheap Spanish 9mm that doesn't
even have a FMJ but it worked ! Or all that Mexican 9mm that was all over the place recently and
was so cheap . I still smell a gov rat big time. ARs are showing up all over, at rediculous prices
but they are still new and available . But not a single bullet especially a 22 ?
With no word of any coming in anytime soon ?

I don't know if its just a local thing , but our Wal Mart is already getting empty shelves on certain
food items . A local tire store also said they are having a hard time getting some brands of the
cheaper tires . Some gas stations are saying there shipments are getting later or put off awaiting
supply . Milk right here in dairy country is getting to where the freshness date is only a few days
away from when it arrived citing fuel and shipping cost .
Banks are having late night closed door sessions all of a sudden .

My wife keeps all receipts from the grocery store.  Prices of the same food items from a year ago average 25% higher.  We are having inflation whether the government says we are or not.  They do not use food or gasoline prices in their inflation rate.  They say it is too "volitile".  The do use the price of a new home.  No one buys a new home every month.  Kind of stupid.  Well anyway, from what I read we are having an inflation rate of between 12-18%.  Socialism also causes shortages.  Remember the long lines in Communist Russia just to get bread.  It is starting to happen here.  Government controls imports, so they can limit ammo imports from Russia, Spain, etc, which if left unlimited, would help eliminate the shortages.

Like Ronald Reagan said, "Government is the problem, not the solution".

Price of gasoline is up, not because of shortages, but because of inflation and government interference in drilling and pipeline constrution, and refinery construction.  We haven't had any new refinerys built since the 70's because of environmental issues.

So you guys need to get into prepping.  Buy ammo when you can, buy food (canned and dry goods), buy toiletry items.  Rotate out the food, using the old first.

In my opinion, every semi auto centerfire rifle needs 1,000 rounds, bolts and levers at least 500 rounds, 22 rifle maybe 5,000 rounds.  This can get your through shortages and high prices.  This is just a start.  Reloaders need primers no. 1, then powder, then bullets, as bullets can be cast from lead as a last resort in that order.  With saltpeter, sulfer, and charcoal, gunpowder can be made also.

I don't know if this is a conspiracy from the anti gunners or market driven demand, or combination of both.
I first started thinking about this a few years back when I read that the US military would no longer sell shot brass to companies that reload and sell.   If you can believe it they decieded to sell it instead to Chinese as scrap at lower price.
Then I started reading about these doomsday preppers that were buying thousands of rounds of ammo to store.
Then read that US agencies like homeland security, and if you can believe it, social security as well as all branches of military
had placed unusually huge purchase orders for military rounds.
The result has been that the munition factories have diverted all brass, powder and bullet production to these rounds resulting in shortages of .22 ect.
Whatever the reason it makes me sad.  They have just about put a stop to my shooting and I fear for the future.  The lefties are not stupid, and I read a proposal years ago by California senator Fienstein that the US should restrict ammo sales.  Well it looks like that is what happened.

The foreign ammo thing kind of has me puzzled too. At the gun shows you used to see more Aguila .22  and Wolf ammo than anything else. Actually piles of it. At least in my area.  But I'm not hearing of it showing up anywhere lately.

I have to go 45 miles to get my loading supplies. I only make that trip about once a month if that so my plan when things settle down is to buy at least one can of powder every trip, hopefully a brick of primers every 3rd or 4 trip and a brick of .22 every couple trips.....

Just another worthless opinion!!

I've asked around at several suppliers here locally, and they say they are not getting a fraction of the shipments they rec'd last year.  Walmart says they once sold many times the amt. of ammo they are receiving.  If that is the case, and they are not getting ammo, it is not just a hoarding problem.

There has been no 22 LR here for months, with the exception of CB shorts and rat shot.

At Gander Mtn. yesterday, they had Aquilla 22LR in the red boxs, $27.94 for 50 rounds.........they can keep  them.

I've been trying to buy 22 LR for over 6 mos. now.  There is none.

Around here you can get anything you want, you just have to get up early and be patient.  Every Wal-Mart has a line starting between 6:30-7:00 waiting for the guy to come in at 7:30.

Before you say "Well we can't get it" be there every morning by 7 am and see for yourself what's coming in.

If you do that every day for a week, you're pretty well guaranteed to get what you want.

Ft Thompson's (LGS)  even got enough .22 in that after posting on the groups and limiting to one bulk pack per customer it lasted for two days.

We started a page watching for ammo and folks posting what is where, so I KNOW the ammo is flowing.

Maybe the Wal-Marts are getting it in based on historical seasonal records because we do have one store that never seems to get any but five others I frequent have it coming in, it is just sold within the first two hours on the shelf.  Shipments seem to be on par with what we were getting before the craze.

I bought ammo every pay day for 2011-2012 so I am VERY familiar with what was coming in before.  Same flow, it just goes out the door quicker.
God Bless Our Troops!

Geez John :) those absolutist statements are just plain false, but I won't argue your belief. I will say that Inflation under our current economic situation is being artificially held off, when it hits..brother just let me say that 100 bucks for a brick of .22 will seem free. The folks in this nation who wanted this president(and the politicians before him) are going to get just what they ask for..they just don't realize it yet :o.    Your starting to see?  85.00 for 500 shots is quite a bargain compared to many other calibers. Better hoard you some 8)

Take heart though, those are gougers prices and our local gunshop is selling several brands of foreign ammo in bricks for 49.00 or less. Still high compared to the "old" ammo prices but still cheap compared to all but pellet guns. On another note, my trip today to the shop showed more primers and powder came in last week and our shop actually came down in price, down now to 24.99 for most powders and 4.99 for 100 CCI primers. I will say that I saw cases of .223 and 7.62x39 just in, all ammo I see is foreign made with sellers and bellot boxes in the greatest abundance.  J
