have new 1874 Sharps 45-70 need load data
« on: March 21, 2013, 01:26:23 PM »
Have a new Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 45-70.   Anyone have accurate load data for the 1874 sharps series of rifles?

Interested in any help I can get.
My FFL holder requires any firearms to be shipped to them via another FFL holder.  So, If I make an offer on a firearm please let me know if this is capable of being done from the start.  Please do NOT mark an item "SPF" to me until we "both" are happy with and in agreement on shipping, funds and the transaction in general.   Thanks

Remington brass, cci br2 (or large pistol primer) 70 grs KIK 2f, .030 fiber wad under a saeco 645 bullet cast from 20-1 alloy,  and lubed with Bullshops nasa lube. Good all the way to 1023 yds and maybe further but haven't tried it beyond that.

When I used the 45-70 in my old Shiloh, before I sold it, my pet load was Federal cases, Federal 215 primers, 62 grs. of GOEX ctg., now it would be Scheutzen or KIK Ffg, .020 card wad and either the Lyman 457125 or RCBS 500-BP cast 25-1.  The round nose Lyman was good out to 400 and the RCBS took me the rest of the way to at least 800.

Any smokeless powder loads?   Have no black powder at all...   never loaded with it.

My other 45-70's are a Encore Pro Hunter, and a Ruger #1.  So I would like smokeless loads that will be good in them too.

Have plenty of cast and jacketed bullets from 320Gr. to 500 Gr.  lots of brass etc..

Have no wads for the case... where to get them?

Farthest I would be shooting is 600 yards.  closest outdoor ranges maximum distance

Yes sir sparatacus, they are iconic as well as a beautiful rifle.  I expect a picture posted could start an avalanche of photo's....but what the heck, here's one of mine.  45-2.4 (90), Montana Rough Rider, Shiloh.  My other is a #1 Sporter in 40-2.5 (70) and set up for target work.

How does the Lyman shoot?  I don't know anything personally but heard rumors that accuracy was a sometime thing with them.  I sure like the looks of them and seriously considered one....and don't they also come in 38-55?

Have not shot it yet... got it a couple weeks ago and have been using my Encore .22 hornet for yote hunting...  So the Lyman will hopefully go to the range this week for sight in.  Right now it just wears peep sites.

Will say tho..  it is one stunning little rifle!   I did think about the 38-55 chambering, but i am a big fan of the hornet (just got a Savage 25 walking varmiter in 22 hornet last week).  Plus I have no 38-55 items to reload with, didn't want to get into another round.

For 35 cal's I shoot the 357 Max on my H&R and also have a custom Encore barrel.  The maxi is one awesome little cartridge!

Aperature sights are all my Sharps wear...come to think of it I have sold all but two of my scoped rifles.  Hmm, had realized that until now, ain't that a hoot.

I would have gone with the 38-55.  I don't have the makin's for it or the Hornet but I have always wanted to play with the 83-55....'course I haven't played with the Hornet either.  I'd like a Hornet in some nice, light German stalking rifle, similar to my 8.15 X 46.  They're just so cool.

Take a look at the CZ527FS in 22 Hornet. They have the Bavarian charm in the great 22 Hornet chambering. Back to the OPs request, I use Trail Boss with Oregon Trail Laser Cast 405 gr bullets, shoots well out to 500 yards with my rolling block. I use Hodgens loading data.
