Just typed a lengthy reply with pictures but when i try to post I get "forbbiden".
If this one flys, I'll try again. But for now the project is back on track.

So basically I just got momentarily really dumb. I’ve been using this very lathe for about ten years and have many, many times used the previously mentioned approach to chuck irregular objects. For example I recently made this tool and I bored the round hole on the lathe:

I just allowed myself to become frustrated. As I was trying to work on this and my wife was making it very obvious that she thought I was spending too much time in the shop. I guess my subconscious mind just said “screw it” and gave up.

It’s amazing how at times we can come up with solutions for really difficult situations, and at other times fail to see the obvious or forget what we already know. I was so focused on chucking “round” that I forgot how to chuck “irregular” if that makes any sense. In any event, thanks to all here for the interest and the suggestions.

edit; someone asked what hardness. It's 40-44 HRc.  If I ever do this again I may make the lug from mild steel.

Sounds like the wife needs to come out to the shop and get her hands dirty. (No disrespect intended) TD

Yeah. But that's not her thing. I would love for her to get involved and have tried to get her interested. I've seen this before in other marriages; the husband has hobbies, the wife has none. So she expects the husband to give up all of his hobbies and "spend time with her" which usually means sitting and watching television.

Fortunately for me my wife is not a TV watcher. She is a very industious, hard working and success oriented person. And so was I throughout my working career but I had a goal of retiring early and enjoying life while I was still able. I've worked my butt off for nearly 4o years and while not rich, have achieved my goal. I used to do many things but I have a degenerating physical thing going on and I can't do all the stuff I love so much. So working in my shop is my "thing" and I enjoy it very much.

Yesterday evening I came from the shop and showed her a pocket knife I'm making that is turning out really well. Her reaction? "What's so great about that? It's just the same old thing."

How's it go...a prophet is always despised in his home town?

But enough of that. Back to Handi-Rifles.

There are a bunch of us in much the same boat! (so be advised, 'we're pulling for ya').
BTW, I LIKE your knife!........and suggest you keep showing her your progress/projects, never can tell when she will warm up to something  ;) .

Put the lug directly under one of the jaws of the 4 jaw chuck.  Should be easy in a 6inch or larger chuck.  That is the beauty of a 4 jaw.  They can hold irregular shapes and allow you to center a bore or location, such as an off center hole or shoulder.

This would be clamping something about 4" in diameter into the chuck, based on the one offset jaw, so I would think most 6" or larger chucks should have a way to do this.  I would think this approach would work pretty well and hold pretty tight - take light cuts and you should be fine.
