Re-stocking model 11
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:17:47 AM »
I'm looking to re-stock a model 11 with detachable box magazine so as to shorten the pull length.  Can anybody recommend a decent wood stock replacement that will fit and can be worked down?  A laminated stock would be preferred, if available.  I am no newcomer to inletting and shaping stocks.

I just put a Boyds laminate on my sav mod 11 308, but it is the internal mag.  I think they offer the DM model.
Overall it was OK.  Little bit of fitting.  I went ahead and did a pillar job on the front screw.  Gonna leave the rear one alone for now and try it.  It appears to be more of a pain.  The front screw, which I got from Boyds, was actually going so far as to impede the bolt as it cycled when tightened, so the new pillar was required.  I just removed their plastic insert with my drill.
thanks,

Thanks for the info.  I have another Boyd's laminated stock that worked out pretty well in another project.  I took a look at what they had available and didn't see specific mention of one for the detachable box magazine but don't think that it would take much to make the model designed for the blind box type work as long as the screw holes match up.  That's a good idea about pillar bedding.  I think I'll do that also, no matter what stock I end up using.  How did the barrel channel fit your barrel?

It appears that Richards Microfit also has laminated stocks that might work for the box magazine model 11.  Anybody have any experience with them?

The barrel in the Boyds stock fit pretty well.  I ordered the longer Boyds action screws when I got the stock.  At first, before doing the pillar job, the front screw would go in so far as to bind the bolt when tight.  So I made me front pillar the proper length to have about 3 complete turns and then tighten.  I then drilled out the front hole including getting rid of the Boyds plastic insert.  I made sure the barrel was not touching back to the lug and the rear tang area is clear as well.

I took it out shooting today and it did pretty good.  It's a 308.  Was trying some 165 Nos BT with LC brass.  Also changing scopes.  I have a couple of loads that went about an inch, so some promise.  I will need to fine tune length and maybe tweek the powder.

thanks,

You are going to have a difficult time finding a large selection of aftermarket DBM stocks for Savages.   Stocky's makes a laminated version, and so does Richard's Microfit.   That's about it.  you can find several models in synthetics...hogue, hs precision, etc.     Good luck with your rifle.
