Buffalo Classic Carbine Followed me home today!
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:39:47 AM »
Well, I couldn't resist.  The little Buffalo Classic Carbine .45 LC I saw yesterday in the corner of that old gun shop talked to me all last night and this morning.  I went at lunch and picked her up.   I'm already planning to strip and hand oil refinish the stock, and possibly ream it out to .454 Casull!  Please try hard not to be overwhelmed by the incredible manliness of the rug in the background!  ;D
Here she is:

;D   You're going to love it. I have one that was reamed to 454 with the GBO reamer and it is a pleasure in 45 Colt and a real Thumper in 454 Casull. I'm getting set up to chamber cast and subsequently do some Schutzen style breech loading once the weather warms. My little darling:

She's a beauty.  If you decide to ream it to 454, they usually shoot the 45lc better.

Thanks guys.   Revbc...that's what I hear.  Strange how reaming the chamber longer and adding a lot more free bore would make the shorter cartridge shoot better, but oh well....some things just is what they is!   I need to do some studying to see how the .454 compares to the mighty 45-70.

How much you want for that rug? :D

Nice looking carbine.  Post some targets...some of us don't have time to shoot anymore and live vicariously through those of you that do....

hah!  The wife just bought it a couple of weeks ago for the living room.   She buys rugs and "stuff" for the house, and I get to buy guns and "stuff".   Not a bad plan!
I will definitey post up some pics of targets when I get a chance to try her out.

YUP, good call great little rifle!!  I liked ém so much I bought TWO!!!  :o ::) Technically I bought a barrel on our board and I bought a complete rifle at the local GS...  BUT point is, those thats gotts ém love em, you will too!

One of mine is a 454 now and the other is staying a 45Colt.

The 454 has been in factory wood, then with the re chamber to 454 I installed blk lam stocks then a plastic thumbhole and lastly, switched to what its in now a factory plastic camo.

The 45 Colt is in Factory blk plastic and has a 1X Nikon I also got here on the board,

Perhaps I ought to get smart and ream mine.  It sure didn't hurt the .357s or the .44.  Can you load .454 with .45 Colt Lee Deluxe Carbide dies?

You could even go all the way with 460 S&W mag.

Maybe you already know this, but .45 takes large pistol primers, .454 takes small rifle magnum, and .460 takes large rifle magnum.

Looks like lots of freebore shooting 45LC in 460 chamber though
12g shortie w/chokes,Tamer .410,12g "Buck" slug gun w/20g extra barrel, 12g smooth bore tracker I, 45/410 w/22vp matched set, 7mm-08, .308 20",

my avatar pic is my 1960 Rambler I bought in 1972 for $175..6 banger 3-on-the-tree...drove it for 5 yrs  22mpg.. was "hot-rodding" (LOL) one night...tore out 1st/reverse gear. Drove it that way for 2 yrs(with no reverse and only 2nd and high)  Had to really plan ahead when parking.

I did not know that...but that is interesting.   I'm guessing if you go to .460 mag, you can still shoot .454 and .45LC?

Yes, but as Garb said, it's a long jump to the rifling, I have a 460 and a 45 Colt so I don't need to do that.  ;)

Gotcha.  Well, I may just rent the .454 reamer and have a go at that just because!    I did try my .35 Whelen barrel on it yday just for giggles, and it fit very nice and tight with no slop, but would not lock up.   I'm guessing that may be an easier fix than if it was really loose with lots of slop.  I think I will read the FAQ about barrel fitting, because I'm sure someone will suggest that soon anyway!  ;D

The reaming makes an improvement over the factory throat/ leade into the rifling. Too bad the factories (not just H&R) have failed to do proper research into the correct reamers for way too many years. Way back Ruger had a poor shooting bunch of 357Mag No.1's, but I digress.....
I would ream it just so I could use the longer case and more Trail Boss powder behind my bullet of choice  ;) , but I got a 45-70 instead  ;D .
I predict you will like it very much.

I wish they still manufactured the BC Carbine. Such a gun would be incredibly..... well Handi. Very cool, nostalgic styling. I like it.

I picked up a NIB carbine last week for $300, but it was a little beat up. It had been to a bunch of gun shows box was shot, a spot on the frame that vibration wore the finish off. It's been awhile since Iwas on here. Where is the info on renting reamers??

Forget it I found it above thanks.

That's about what I put in mine.....He wanted $325 for it, and I got it for 325 out the door...he paid the tax.   I thought it a fair price.

Yep I had the tax to pay so it was $321 out the door. I been shooting the Lee 230 tumble lube bullet and 5.6 gr of Red Dot. runs about 850 fps. Fun to shoot I really like the gun, it matches up with my Buffalo Classic 45-70.

You know I don't do Lee... ::) But I'll bet it will do them just fine! Most 45 colt dies will do 454 Cassull.

Do you need a few 454 cases to give it a try? Say the word brother ill get them to you!

I do Lee  ;D , and though I dont have the 454 I have done 32Long with 32ACP, 357 M with 38Spl, 44M with 44Spl and 45C with 45ACP.
Seems to me that if you are shooting the cases in the same chamber that about all you need is enough 'neck' area sizing to hold your bullet of choice.

Or with Trail Boss in any of them use Std. Primers as it ignites easily.

Thanks Brian.  If I ream it and can't find brass, I'll give you a holler.

I may be stroking my canoe with half a paddle, but I have never used a magnum anything primer.  Just haven't felt the need for it.  None of the loads I have used call for it, and they work.  I haven't found unburned powder in anything I load for.
