Older Contender rear sight removal

I desided to put scopes on a few of my older TC Contender barrels.  They have the older rear sights that do not hinge foreword upon removal of the elevation screw.  It is obvious that the front pin needs to be driven out.  The question is what do I use to drive the pin out with, so as not to damage it or the sight?

Your best bet is a drift that is slightly smaller than the hole.  A good hardwares store or tool dealer will have one.  I took the barrel with me into the store when I got one, but you may want to ask first depending on where you are and how well you are known.

  A 1/16" roll pin punch would be the preferred tool, but a 1/16" drift will do nicely as well.  Drive the pin all the way out, then hold your thumb on top of the sight as you remove the punch to keep things from flying.  Sometimes my thumb forgets it's job and then I have to hunt allover my neat & clean ::) workshop for that *^%& little spring.

While you drive out a roll pin be careful to support the sight so you dont exert pressure on the screws holding the base.  Regarding base screws, many times they have sealant in the threads.  You can heat the screws by inverting the barrel, breaking the bond. As always, use a strong proper fitting screwdriver or driver bit.  If you use a Weaver base---it is the 92a.  And, keep the removed sights with a note as to their origin.  rp

Check the diameter of a standard wire clothes hanger...

I have used them, but I don't remember what for...

I do have all the correct punches now...

Is the procedure pretty much the same with the extractor.  I got a barrel with the wrong extractor and it doesn't reach the rim.  Got a new one coming.  I know their is a small spring under the extractor to be careful and not loose.  After punching the pin out will everything pull right out?
