Handi Pallet Laminate Refinish ***Finished***

This thing is hideous without finish. Looks like #2 pine, sands like concrete.

Few big low spots I had to block sand out:

Reading the other thread, would leather dye be best? If not, what color would look best? Do all the cinnamon laminates look like this stripped?

Looks like pallet wood because it is!!  Its just laminated! LOL  Yes the suttlities will come out as long as you do your part prepping the wood for its finish.

I sand to the finest grit availble then continue with wet rag wife down to ''whisker'' the stock and continue with finer and finer grads of steel wool. Then a final good wipe down and a couple coats of finish then take that right down to wood... Then as many voats as you like till the finish you desire is reached.

I rarely use any stain, but have always used regular Minwax stain. I have been using tounge oil in place of linspeed oil. I like both

This is going to be my next refinish on a standard pallet wood set.  The first link is the product info.  The ncgunowners link is the one I found this morning.  It's a long thread with tons of pictures and how he used the aquafortis reagent to refinish an old remington stock.  He actually refurbished the entire rifle.  It's a great read on how to refurbish an old rifle to almost like new.

Skip to page 7 to see the finished rifle.  A pallet lam with that kind of grain definition would look really nice.

Okay, sanded, whiskered, sanded some more, whiskered some more and then applied some stain, Early American Minwax.

This is 15 minutes after first coat. Liking it so far.

I like the color before the Minwax best, at least on this PC monitor. Red Mahogany and deep walnut tones are my favorites, if we aren't talking fancy grained or striped maple and such.

Not me, I was ready to think paint when it was finish sanded. I took several strips of pine to the hardware store, the Minwax Golden Oak and Minwax Early American looked the best in store.

Until the stain hit the actual butt stock, I was worried.

One thing you have to remember in refinishing a gun stock for a gun that is regularly hunted or shot is that the finishing system must be easily repairable.  Being able to steam out a compression type ding or if it is a deep scratch that the finish doesn't flake or chip and it can be filled.  The finest and most expensive rifles and shotguns have a hand rubbed oil finish for a reason.

A local company here in Vermont makes laminated wood for stocks.  Just about every layer is birch and they do colors too.  With the proper care and time they re-finish very nice (As you know). Nice job!


They also make a SUPER hard, tough laminate (Diamondwood) that can actually be polished with a wheel however, it is VERY heavy stuff and not for stocks (makes nice pistol grips).   Look them up http://www.rutply.com/

Well, finally got it back together. A few coats of satin poly and some time in the drying oven makes for quick work. I also took Gcrank1's advice and fitted a new pad as well. A 1/2 Decelerator rifle pad makes this shoulder really quick.

Now I need a scope and some rings. I am seriously thinking about the Burris Fullfield E1 in 2-7x35mm, light and compact and getting good reviews. I want a couple for the other barrels when I get around to buying them.

Im not 'up' on those new scopes, but if I were buying one it would for sure be a model with a bit longer eye relief that fits just ahead of the hammer (then no hammer ext. needed either).

Looks great! I am a fan of Burris scopes myself. They are pretty much the only brand I use although I have purchased a Weaver and Nikon scope recently. I have several Fullfield 2s and Short Mag series scopes.They have all performed to my expectations. I have yet to try any of the E1 series. Let us know how it works.

For about the same price as the Burris you can get a US made Leupold VX-1 that doesn't have the huge power ring to deal with so it can be mounted in medium or low rings, it also has ¼" click adjustments instead of the ½" of the Burris, has more eye relief and weighs less.

hey quick i looked at the link you posted and really liked that LR duplex reticle option.  I assume LR is "long range" it has a couple of dots on the bottom crosshair.. I was thinking might be usefull for having elevation points for shooting reduced loads in certain calibers like the maxi loaded with light 38s?

That should be helpful, I have a VX-II 3-9x33 Ultralight with that reticle, but I've not played with it yet.
