Colt/Walther 1911-22
« on: March 24, 2013, 06:37:20 AM »
The PX has a couple of these guns. The rail model runs about $30 less than the Gold Cup. The GC has adjustable sights and a smoother slide. Anyone have any experience with either one?

No help on this one, but I really loved my original Colt Ace, one of those I shouldn't have sold.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I looked for the Colt GC or the Walther with adjustable sights for quite a while. I gave up. A friend of mine ended up with one. If shooting an inch and half group at 25 yds from bags is acceptable to you, buy it. That's the absolute best his will shoot and that's with Winchester EZXS ammo which is a hard find. It really didn't shoot much better with match ammo than it did with Federal Gameshok 40 gr ammo. The price point ammo was all over. There's very little difference between the standard model and the GC, just adjustable sights. Otherwise it's the same gun. If you have a 1911 frame, I'd strongly suggest looking at the Kimber Target conversion. Mine thinks it's a rifle with sub sonic ammo.

I already have a Kimber 45 so the 22 kit may be a natural choice.

Dinny, I know the 'siren call'........but agree that a quality conversion unit is your best bet. They are quick to swap and you get to have your same 'feel' in grip & trigger, which always serves one well (and the more rounds always helps a trigger get better too  ;) ).

I picked up 2 this week: a GI Model and a Rail Model, my buddy bought the Gold Cup.  I wasn't that interested in the Gold Cup as I have a Ciener Platinum Cup on a dedicated 1911 receiver, so I don't have to swap around.  The GI Model is going to my daughter for her 50th birthday, she is an avid 1911 shooter and has a 38 Super and a .45.  I kept the Rail Model for myself to be used as a plinker and truck gun.  Ran 150 or so rounds through it the first day as did my buddy with the Gold Cup.  I used Fed. bulk and he used Rem. Goldens.  Neither one of us had a malfunction of any sort, not one.  Our shooting bench survived the winter, but alas target frames did not, so our shooting was at clay birds on the berm at various distances 10-50 yds.  Jeff is 20 yrs. younger 20/20 eyesight so he out shot me as usual,   If I could come up with more excuses I would.

Overall impression of this Colt/Walther 1911 is it is an excellent buy, I paid 380 for the Rail and 340 for the GI.  Big drawback right now is the lack of extra magazines, none available normal outlets.  Saw some on e bay for 58 bucks, not that desperate.  We bought ours at an ACE Hardware, which also had a SIG 1911 22 rf, for 450 or something.  To me the Colt/Walther Gold Cup was a better buy.  Have to get the target frames up to snuff and bench it.
