Russian Mortar
« on: March 25, 2013, 03:54:39 AM »

Formerly part of the Rotunda Collection until 2009, this is a 10'' mortar 36'' long. It is believed to be Russian, as what is thought to be Cyrillic writing is visible on one of the trunnions. As such it is likely to be a Crimea trophy. The measurements seem to be in Imperial units because the Russians used a system effectively the same as the British.

If you look very carefully at the photo steelcharge linked to in the "Russian Carronade"/swivel post, in the lower right hand corner there's the muzzle of a mortar with the same band just in front of the "extra-thick" belly band (which is just visible in the very corner).

I realize it's hard to prove this without more evidence, but perhaps this Russian mortar and the swivel gun in the previous post are the very same battery mates shown in the photo, reunited after 160 years?  Food for thought, anyway!

Could be, but probably not. There are many other photos of the Sevastopol forts that show mortars like this.
In an another, different angle photo of the "swivel battery", the mortar can be seen completely and it's certainly of the same type as the one posted here.
