If you eat any frozen catfish, make sure it doesn't come from here.

When I do buy frozen fish, I make sure its not from over seas. It seems like so much of it anymore is from China and elsewhere.

PM, I would be much more trusting of the catfish from the Ohio, than catfish from overseas.

I don't like or eat catfish.  Remember too many hanging around the sewage outfalls back in the old days.

Back in the 50s, women did not understand how septic systems worked.  They used lots of chlorine bleach to keep their clothes white.  This killed the bacteria in the septic tanks, and plugging up the leech fields.  Soon they were overflowing and running into the ditches that took away storm water and deposited it into the rivers and lakes.  I remember back around 1958 following the stream of our septic system down the drainage ditch.  It was joined by other small streams coming from other septic systems overflowing from up hill and down hill.  We followed that small stream as it got bigger, straight to the Cumberland River.  It flowed into the river, and 100 yards down stream poor people were catching those catfish with cane poles and taking them home to feed their families.  To this day I can't face a catfish.

i love catfish. i catch a bunch of them every year.they keep well in the freezer. i sure dont buy them tho.with catfish, the contaminants gather in the fat, the belly meat mostly.i dont eat that. the ideal eating catfish is a 2 to 5 pounder.the best eating is the little cats about 1 to 2 lbs.the smaller fish havent lived long enuf to gather a lot of crap in ther bodies. i have no problem eating the bigger ones but i basically stay away from the belly meat.think catfish tenderloin.

all my catfish meat comes from the grand lake of the cherokees.

All of the catfish we eat, comes from Lake Erie. Same water as the perch or walleye we eat. Always cut the belly meat/fat off the bigger fish. Thats where the contaminate's are. gypsyman

Many of thefish caught in our great oceans contain toxic levels of chemicals in their bodies. These fish are marketed as another type of fish that is not classed as toxic. Read an article about it on the Internet last week. At one time fish from other countries could be brought into the US and relabeled under an in country producers label. I think the catfish growers finally got that changed.
-
Imported catfish and the high prices of feed, caused largely by the ethanol fuel scandal, has put about all of the small independent catfish growers out of business. The corporate fish growers own their own feed mills and milked the little growers dry with their feed prices. Now the large growers are having a hard time supplying their own kill plants and some are tearing down ponds, not just rebuilding the ponds. Go figure. They have long tried to get government subsidies but could only get support on the grain crop production side of it. I have been out of that business 20+ years so I am mostly our of the loop. ear

Not all catfish are bottom feeders. Some are predators. I've caught blues and channel cats on bass lures, in cold, running blue water. My grandpa used to do bottle sets on backwater lakes--- the trick is to hang the bait several feet above the anchor weights. Use the right bait, 'cause if they'll hit minnows they're probably not bottom feeders. If you're really worried about it, buy farm raised fish. They used to feed them whole kernel corn, and the fish surface to eat it. Probably fed on some kind of grain (wheat, which is not wheat anymore) these days.

Thin sliced, breaded, fried, with a little Tabasco--- country boy heaven!
