O.T. End of Cabin Fever
« on: March 26, 2013, 10:23:02 AM »
Guy's, I think it is really, finally happening.  Bright sun, brisk wind, temps around 40.  The snow's melting and the wind is carrying off a lot of the moisture.  It's a nice gradual thaw.  It's supposed to be this way for a week.  There's a foot and a half of the white stuff out there, but the shooting bench is emerging. ;D   Man...I gotta get out to the woods.  The wild leeks and 'shrooms'll be up soon!  We're goin' for a walk.......which one should I take ??? ???

I don't know which one is worse.  You or George.  He keeps telling me of his 80 -90 degree days and running the A/C.  I posted this before, but some may have missed it.  If any of you want to get here for Summer, it's scheduled for July 31st from ten til two. ::)

snow is still far to deep up here to go for a walk in the woods.

and it still drops to -20C every night.

the forecasts are saying Plus temps but we never reach them...   but the sun is out today, and Man does it feel good!

(-6.5C right now...   but it will get warmer...  I hope)

Here in Connecticut, its about 40 now, was up to 47-8 this afternoon... Over last few days about the same, down to freezing or just above at nights. Snow is almost gone here... still piles at the end of the driveway and where ever the plows made big piles, but we had a foot and a half on the ground just 11 days back. :)

Nothing is green here yet... but I can see where the grass will be. ;)

VERY much looking forward to spring here... Fishing season will open here before Turkey...  :o

Petemi, I'm a bit concerned about the deer lately. Are ya hearing about any starving to death in the woods lately?

I haven't seen any real evidence of it.  No ravens or eagles circling. I saw a doe and fawn yesterday and both were really thin.  To make matters worse for them, the snow is pretty deep with a crust the wolves and coyotes can run on while the deer break through, get slowed down and cut up their legs.  They should be okay if they can make it another week or ten days.

Still too much snow here but it got into the 40's today so the melt is beginning. I'm hoping in a couple weeks I'll be able to start serious turkey scouting.

It has been mild here with 70s predicted for a few days. We sure could use some rain for the wheat. I killed a bunch of my lawn, in no great hurry to lay some sod. Wife thinks it's time, I don't.

Ok I'm confused!

Whats snow and why wouldn't the woods be green?

I don't worry over the possums much as I have a full time possum patrol, she hates em and kills every one she finds.(80 lbs shepardor full time yard protector)

I just hate finden em after a chicken dies!

I have to agree with Pete...that's the only "good" kind!  We have had 3 of them in our backyard in the last year and I live in the middle of one of the biggest metro areas in the country.  (Note:  I said ONE of the biggest...not THE biggest!)  ;)   Heck I've seen foxes, coyotes, and even a wild turkey in our neighborhood recently.

Well guys, it's happening.  Three days in a row of warm sunny weather.  The drive is down to about 40% clear road gravel ;)   The shooting bench is coming out!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D   The 100 and 200 yard targets are out enough to shoot at as is the 300...Still can't get out there though :'( :'( :'( :'(   Soon I hope.  We've got Friday and Saturday ahead with warm weather forecast.  Supposed to get colder and nastier Easter Sunday......of course, nothing like snow on an Easter bonnet ::)   The big deal is that it is doing it.  We lost another good four or five inches today and we've got another good two or three hours of sun.  The horses are chomping at the bit to get out to pasture.  As soon as I can get the Silverado out there, I'll have the fences repaired from the winter deer and storm damage and they can go.  I love it :-* Come on Black flies, deer flies, mosquitoes, and horse flies.  I'm ready for ya.

I don't care what anyone else thinks, you Canukistanians are Okay. ::)   I miss getting up there.  Sault, ON is only an hour away, but it is a royal PITA going an coming.  We live in a crazy world.  Years ago, the way I understand it, the two cities, Sault, ON and Sault, MI shared the education of the kids.  They had some years and classes in Ontario and others in Michigan.  Whatever happened to those carefree years?  I went to an Ontario gun show a while back and when asked by customs what I was doing in Canada, I told them.  They tore the car apart and just about strip searched Patty and I.  Now, don't get me wrong, the same happens coming south too.  The last time I did it, southbound traffic was backed up all the way across the International Bridge into town on the Canadian side.  I finally got to a point where U.S Customs people were sorting traffic into lanes.  It turned out the Customs guy in my lane was a friend.  "Hi Pete" slapping a yellow sticker on the windshield and off I went.  That's the last time I was in Canada....and I miss it.

Group of us used to go up there fishing every spring.  Last trip we got our vehicles tore apart going and coming.  Took the fun out of it for us too.

Saw my first Robin today!  Spring is here - sort of.  If that Robin wants any worms he's gonna need a snow shovel!

I live in Central Saskatchewan, it has been over 20 years since I was in the USA.  Hawaii.  and almost 30 since I crossed the worlds longest "Undefended" border....

took a carload of kids about 12 minutes to get across to the bar on the US side to buy beer, and 15 minutes coming back.

it is a real shame what the US HSA has done to your border guards, and just plain arrogance has done to ours....

oh.. and Robins live all winter up here, and I saw my first Gopher today.

but by the looks of things, we'll have near 6 months of snow on the ground this winter before it is all gone.

Thermometer says it got up to 68 here in Billings, Mt. today, Pete.  Snow is all gone here, still had some in the shade up at the cabin Tues. and Wen. when I was up there.  Lot of deer all around, counted 16 east of the cabin, two behind, four groups of from 5 to 13 north of me and when I went to the neighbors, 7 more on the ridge 30 yd west of my cabin.  If I can get some extra tags, should be a good year hunting!  Spring is here, waiting for some nice wet, heavy spring snow for the extra moisture.  DP
