Nate C got me licking my chops for more stubby barrels w/his stumpy 357. I just picked up three handi rifles in the last month or so and, well, everything in my toy box gets chopped & threaded. So here's my 308 boomer. It definitely draws a few looks after I light one off. It's got a smooth thread protector for that stealth look.

A hair over 16 - legal here... with an AAC 762SDN6 it makes a short hunting package. With the thumbhole stock and the barrel I'm at like 28-29 overall which is still not in SBR territory. I'm tickled with it and now I just have to find a good compact 2-7 power scope.

Rob, how does that 16" barrel shoot ? I already have a 30cal can and can't decide between chopping a handi, or building a Remmy 700 with a 16" barrel. It will be for whitetail hunting shots no more than 250 yards.

While I haven't had a good scope on it yet, it's shooting minute-of-deer with a Chinese Acog knockoff. It's doing about 2-3" @ 100 with ball ammo. I haven't seen any stringing like I've read about here on some other rifles. That said, I have an 18" Remmy that is threaded but heavy barreled with a tactical stock. I like the 700 for a bean field rifle, and the handi for a spot & stalk.


Try it I don't think you'll be disappointed. But heck if you are, a new barrel is only $96 away!

Haven't looked at stocks before but I am interested in restocking and lightening up a 357. Is that a standard stock or an aftermarket? Thanks, ear

Oldshooter, ya put me on the spot ???   First, I don't think I'd cut a .308.  Mine's 22 inches, and that's probably shorter than optimum..  But, It is used as a long range rifle and I want every fps. I can get.  For the same reason, I wouldn't put a red dot on it because it would cover a lot of target at three to 400 yards.

The way you plan to use the rifle, it's going to be fine short and with a red dot.  I like them in close, poor light....dusk and dawn. 

As I already have done with some of these, I'd use a different caliber for a shorty....the Maxi, .44, .38-55, .30-30, .45 Colt, .35 Rem, .356/.358.  That's just me and how I use my rifles.

Actually that's a really good question. I bought it at a pawn shop and figured it was a factory stock. I believe it's a "Handi-Grip" stock. Check H&R's website to see it. I have this, a 300 blk, and a Survivor in the Handi-rifle family, and of course other rifles in general, and I gotta say it's quickly becoming one of my favorite stocks. I have never been a fan of thumbholes, but once I shouldered it and shot it, I really found it comfortable.

Wow ok I did not realize that. That will temper my list of barrels I was going to buy (44, 357, 223, 243, 30-06, 270, etc). Crap! Hmm, I'm going to have to read up on fitting myself and see if that's an option. I've got some skilz and no fear.  I have some learning to do I see...

It is indeed a Handi-Grip, there's a review that covers it well in the FAQs and many, many posts on it, made by Choate and available from H&R and lots of other retailers.  ;)

Yup, see the barrel fitting info in the FAQs, well worth the time spent in case ya need it, used barrels usually sell for around $125 or so here, I've bought and fitted a few dozen myself, but have also bought many accessory barrels from H&R. ;)

You know Pete I tend to agree with you, but I also wanted something REALLY compact, especially w/the can hanging off of it. We can hunt here in VA w/suppressors, so that was some of the motivation. I actually cut & threaded my Survivor too. Again tho neither will be more than 200yd rigs, so I don't have any unrealistic expectations. Heck I've never shot a deer over 150 yds - it's so thick around here. I built a 308 AR a few years ago, and it's got an 18" barrel and it is a tack driver to way-out distances, so I feel pretty confident that a 16 incher will be ok for what I need. I remember as a young shooter seeing the highpower pistol silhouette guys booming away with 7mmBR xp100's, and if they can shoot a stumpy barrel accurately, so can I! I am digging the Maxi now. That may be the next barrel...

You know I did a thread a while back about 3 years ago I guess' about distance you have killed a white tail. folks all over the country posted. At one time I figured the average and it came to something like sixty yards average shot!

It really comes to $160 just getting a new barrel?  if so that ruins a few plans of mine. I might as well just buy another H&R, the place I got mine sells em for $239, $169 for pardner's

Oldshooter, no problem.  The .308 is just one of the calibers I personally wouldn't shorten.  It'd be sort of like a 25-06 in a handgun.  What's the point of having all that range potential and then reducing it?  Granted I've done exactly that with some of mine.  The .356 and .38-55 come to mind.  But I did it to fill a mid range niche.  That's pretty much what Robc10x is doing with the .308.  It'll work fine for what he wants.

Yeah Rob...do the Maxi, you'll like it. ;)   That makes a fine shorty.

Unfortuneately YES...

Makes the 125 most around here ask for a used barrel allot more desireable huh...

Keep your eyes open, we have enough members swapping barrels it will not take too long for someone to offer one up for sale/trade.

Refer to the FAQ's for fitting. Its pretty easy plus pointers and advice are FREE  ;)
