I have an old, new in the box, third generation colt.  A friend told me there was somethig wrong with all the third generation Colts.  Is this true?

Some of the early ones had serious quality control issues, but the later ones were much better with polish and bluing better than 2nd Gen.  On 3rd's, Colt went to a solid base pin bushing (like Ruger) and changed the geometry of the action some.  They can still be tuned into fine shooters though.  My two early 3rds could hardly be cocked when new but with a little parts fitting and smoothing they timed perfectly and are as smooth as most custom actions.

I bought my SAA new in 1977, and have never had a problem with it. It still shoots great.

I had a nickeled .44 spl a few years ago.  I was a great shooter (except for trying to see a shiny front sight in the sunlight) and had a wonderful smooth action.  I bought it used, so I don't know if it came from the factory that way, or if it had an action job.  I know I really liked the gun but wanted a blue one to carry in the woods, so I traded it off.  I wouldn't hesitate to buy/shoot any third gen Colt.  44 Man

nothing wrong with them the fit and finish just isnt up to the old standards. If you ever get a chance check out a top line USFA gun my buddys .44 special is every bit as tight and well finished as a freedom arms gun or one of my linebaughs and it cost quite a bit less.
