On what happened during the AWB ban back in the 90s. I haven't been following any sort of politics but for the past few years so I wasn't around for it.

I read a post that got me thinking. It said that most people who thought a compromise on the first AWB would appease any gun control advocates have learned their lesson. So after it was passed, how was the overall climate? They got rid of "assault weapons" but I know They couldn't have just been satisfied with that and not introduce any more controls. Wondering what the next issue or proposed law was after that

I have to agree with this opinion....We are in a whole new world now. The generation coming on has so many hangups, no fear of retribution for any of their act, total defiance. We have failed our children and Grandchildren in spades, even compaired to the falures of our parents and Grandparents to appraise us (forcefully) of the pending doom. I have not a good thing to say about the econ, or the leadeship i am forced to submit too.
 
People are crazy, I freq see posts for reloading equip...like one last week "I paid 80.00 dollars a set for these dies, one Lee set and one RCBS Set, and Im just trying to get my money back. The guy is either a total liar, or a desperate idiot, regardless of which, it is a sign of a sore state of affairs.
 
I love to trade on this board, and others....i purchase more than I sell, I trade at local business, and strive to be a good neighbor. When I leave the area I live in I will be missed......if 100 families such as mine leave, the town would die.
 
I live in a small community, sandwiched between 2 small towns, hardly 9000 folks between the 2. For my are south of Charlotte NC, this is small. The local econ can't survive many more hits. I will hate to leave this area, I raised my children here, and now my grands are being raised, But I am leaving. The area even as small has turned into such a politically correct mish mash of folks that it makes me want to puke. The 20 and 30 somethings are full of themselves, greed and selfishness is rampant, and their form of barter and trade is to come with a handful of I want and a mouthful of what have you done lately...the self supposed privilege they feel is appaling.
I dont want my G-babies raised in this type of mess.
I am gonna leave. as soon as a few things clear for the family, Im gonna sell to the first person to get close to market value buy another place were there are a few miles between neighbors, and you can still enjoy a Saturday breakfast and coffee at a local cafe that it takes 15 mins to drive to.
I am tired of trying to educate people, tired of taking it on the chin, I am no longer gonna be a role model for a lost society and cause.

One difference between the original AWB and the proposed one now was that the MAIN focus then was on handguns, not rifles.  Even though rifles were included in the ban (mag cap, some "features" such as bayonet lugs, flashhiders, etc) the main push was handguns which was spearheaded by the Brady Campaign.
 
At the time, AR rifles were not nearly as popular as they are now.  Shotguns were pretty much ignored by the anti's.  The result was that not nearly as many gun owners were affected by the first AWB as what would be affected by the one proposed by Feinstein this time.  There was not nearly the "pushback" from gun owners.  The attitude of a lot of gun owners was "it doesn't affect MY gunsport so why worry about it".  Now a lot more gun owners have realized we have to stick together and fight against all gun laws.

i suppose now since they're specifically trying to ban a gun every other gun owner has they feel more strongly about it. but what did the brady campaign and others try to ban after that?

mongrel, that sounds exactly like the kind of place i'm looking for. few miles out of a small town that has its own shops and a cafe where they know all their customers by name... and a local shop that has everything needed for the town. in the middle of nowhere. not a small town outside of a big town, then the small town just becomes residential and the big one has all the shops. got any ideas?

The anti's continued to try to pass more legislation, but 2 years after the AWB was passed the Republicans got control of the House and Senate in the 1996 mid term elections.  As a result, almost all of the anti gun legislation that was introduced by the anti's (democrats) was defeated in committee, before it ever got to the House or Senate floor for a vote.
 
When the shootings at Columbine and other places happened during the AWB there was, of course, a resurgence in the campaign of the anti's.  The problem, for them, was they already had their AWB in place and there was no widespread public support for more bans, AND the Republicans were in power.
 
Today the only thing holding up sweeping anti gun legislation is the Republican controlled House.  The anti's are desperate to get any gun bans passed they can, before the public fervor of Aurora and Newtown settles down (remember, the left's motto is "never let a good crises go to waste".
The critical time for gun owners is the upcoming 2014 mid term elections.  If Republicans remain in control of the House and can regain control of the Senate we'll be okay (at least for a while).
If the Democrats get control of both the House and the Senate, along with having the presidency then the flood gates will open and you'll see legislation pushed thru like never before.

No worries, the next massacre is already being planned and it isn't going to matter what kind of weapons are used--the gun-grabbers will use it to go for the whole tamale.  They will want to squash the Second Amendment altogether.  Osama will lead the charge and will claim along with almost all of the Dumycrats that they have
" evolved" on the issue.  Osama will find a way to use an executive edict to try to override the Constitution for the sake of the "chidrens."
