45 70 short / no throat
« on: March 30, 2013, 05:33:22 AM »
I have a 45 70 contender barrel that has a short, or non existent throat. According to Mike Bellam, this no throat was common on the early 90's 45 70's.
I did not do a bore cast, but I did seat some bullets [ meister 405gr cast bevel base ] in the case and tried to chamber them......and discovered that the bullet had to be seated deeper than crimp groove. I could see sharp, deep marks in the lead nose from the pressure it took to seat the bullet deeper into the case when the action was closed.

Apparently, this throat is an accuracy-wrecker? Anybody else seen this in the 45 70 barrels? What did you do about it?

Throat reamer? Bore riding boolit? Or shooting it the way it is?

I've only had one T/C barrel in 45-70, which is not much of a sampling, but it doesn't have that problem. Mine has a proper throat cut in it from the factory. I can seat 405's just fine. I do use a bore riding 535 Postell also.

Thanks for the reply.
It's always interesting to hear what others factory throats look like, lol.
I think I'm going to have Tom at Accurate molds make me a mold for this throat. With the price that molds are going for on glee-bay, one is just as far, or further ahead to get a custom mold made.
