Preferred Platform for Carry
« on: March 30, 2013, 08:09:48 AM »
I was wondering what is everyone's preferred platform for carry, I am trying to ask the question so the model does not come into the answer.

When out I prefer the single stacked magazine that functions in SA/DA with decocking lever offered by Sig Sauer.  When I am on the farm, Glock.

Deep concealment, compact single stack 9mm. Glock 19 or 36 for pretty much anything else. Pretty much anytime, P3AT with belt clip appendix carry. Also have pocket holsters, shoulder holsters, belly bands, ankle holsters, the list goes on.  Just use those whenever the spirit moves me.

Glock 29SF for most everything, Ruger Single six or Security Six for small game, plinking.

For carry "in public", it's a toss up between a Glock (26), and a compact 1911 (Kimber Ultra).  Almost always have something small in my pocket (Ruger LCP)   In the woods, any thing goes, depending on what I am doing, and where I am.  Partial to big bore revolvers though...

38 Special S&W Airweight in a pocket while in town, in the woods, always a big bore revolver.

38Spl. S&W Airweight was my preference, and is still good, but the LCP fits with about anything I choose to wear so it is always there.
My criteria is light enough to not be sagging me down and thin/trim enough to not be showing lumps & bumps; as for caliber, more is better, so the little 22's, 25's or 32's are now out with me (had 'em all.....).

The very fastest method is to carry it in your hand. The second is belly holster in front

What kind of pants do you use? , even my 'mature fitting' jeans have too much print and lumpy like a pipe wrench feel with a 'J' in the front pocket. In a wallet holster it smooths out but is even thicker and the boot grip on the snub 442 S&W sticks out the top. I often can not, nor do I care to always be walking around with a long tailed shirt draping my carry (and am suspicious of some who do dress that way;..... well, it can be cause for more assessment of them).

Wrangler one size bigger than normal. Use a Backwoods pocket holster (rough thin leather with plastic on outside over leather, very thin) and my J frame is Ti. it weighed 12 oz. from the factory and I replaced the grips with lighter ones.

Single stack .40 S&W IWB. Compact that shoots like a midsize.

If I'm feeling woodsy I'll trade up to a 6 1/2" SA revolver in a pancake rig worn cross draw style.

For walkabout I like my shoulder rig for the 4 5/8ish" single actions, even the 22s. It just keeps it handy and out of the way if I need to do some bushwackin' or (heaven forbid!) work.

For me it is same way every day:  Single stack sub-compact .45ACP in a tuckable IWB hybrid holster strong side @ 3:00 with forward cant, either un-tucked and covered by a jacket if weather is appropriate or shirt tucked if not, with spare mag weak side pocket (yeah, I know it is slower, but...).

Oh, and a gentle reminder - train and practice with your typical clothing and carry method.  A lot.  No really, do it.

I sold all my pistols but three. I carry either a Glock 23 or 27, either in a kydex paddle or inside w/b soft holster as a belly gun. Either gun works about the same.

same here but at camp youll see me once in a while with my glock 20 and theres a glock 23 in the console of the truck that gets carried once in a while. For the most part though its a 1911.

the 1911 is a great old gun that still works but it is heavy and that is not so good for everyday discrete carry.

I like all autos for CCW, love double action revolvers, colts S&W etc. but most of the time I am with a semi-auto, Pants Columbia one size larger than needed however I may be making some changes as one size larger is quite enough to make a quick get dresses manuver.  On the place whatever I want as I own it.  Jim

That 'pants one size larger' is difficult for me as I suffer from that all too common older guy disease, GNB (Got No Butt) and dont want to be wearing braces (suspenders) AND a belt. The same for a heavyish handgun makin' the sag and pullin' me down.

I never had a big butt always suffered from noazzatall. I seldom wear spenders , get a light handgun , try a air weight 13 oz.. or a 340 PD 12 oz.. And don't wear shirts made out of slick material. Also there are pads you can add to pants that are made to keep shirt from slipping out they also help keep pants from slipping down. If you want to be armed and have control of your own protection you often need to make some changes in how you act , dress and where you go. Just saying ..........

Doug, I do agree that a single stack anything sure packs on me better than a dbl. stack, so right there is a good start. I was torn between the true 'pocket 380s mini's' and the sgl. stack small 9mm's, but think I went right with the mini. It even fits in my shirt pocket and I hardly notice it's weight. Way more beans the the old mini 22 autos of about the same size. I still have a problem finding a discreet carry in my lifestyle all the time for even an airweight 'J' revolver, not so with the mini. I know this doesnt meet with universal approval, and dont want to get a hijack onto that topic. I think we can all agree that a 380 is better than a 22 and way better than none.

My primary carry is a full size RIA Government 1911 A-1 .45, back-up is a Kel Tec PF-9 9mm. Woods carry is a JP Sauer & Sohn Chief Marshall .357 Mag. Holsters depends on how I'm dressed and what I plan to be doing. I have open carry holsters, conceal carry holsters and holsters just for hunting. To me having the right belt is as important as having the right holster. My full sized 1911 rides very comfortable, and quite concealable, with a good belt and holster combo. I was truly surprised at how much I like carrying the RIA. I'm 5' 9", 160lbs and don't find it particularly heavy either. For weight and concealability I think single stacks are the way to go. I know my single stack RIA 1911 .45 feels  lighter and is definitly less bulky than my son-in-law's double stack Taurus Millenium Pro 9mm. I had wanted one like his untill I actually held his in my hand. Good gun but just oo heavy and bulky for my taste. Find that to be the same with any double stack I've held.

For daily carry I like a compact, double stacked, 9mm semi-automatic.  I like striker fired pistols with no manual safety or decocking levers  to mess with.

When working in hi-risk areas I like a full sized .40 cal striker fired semi-auto.  Again no manual safeties or decocking levers to fool with.
