Today I was in a pawn shop in Pensacola, FL.  They had a Bear static recurve for $159.95 and an Indian Archery 20# recurve that would be great for a kid.  I noticed an autographed picture of Fred Bear with his lion.  I asked if it was for sale, and the owner said no but he let me examine it.  It turns out his father was one of a few that got to hunt with Fred on St. Vincent's Island in the early 1970s.  He had a copy of the newspaper article with the picture.  This hunt is on the Fred Bear DVD series.  Very cool stuff.

I spent a lot of cold winter nights thumbing through the Bear Archery catalogue. Somehow I ran across one of the films Fred Bear made, that sure made an impression on a teenage boy.


Truthfully I haven't been right in the head ever since. ;D

yet to see a traditional bow
in a pawn shop in these parts,
and i've been a pawn-shopper
for decades.
got my last hoyt for 24.00+ change
looked like it just came out of the
box. sheer luck. right place. right time.
lots of diamonds to be had, but a
lot of manure has to be sorted through.

When Fred first moved his bear archery south to Gainesville, fl I visited the museum in the factory. Wow what a treat. After that every time I went home to visit in Florida I tried to stop by.  :)

You ever get to visit there Swampy? It's not there any more. Last time I stopped in it was gone.

They moved it to Bass Pro Shop Headquarters in Springfield, MO.  I've never seen it but I would love to.  Bear was really letting the collection go to crap.  Stuff was being stolen.

it's a shame they would let mementoes
of the figurehead of modern archery go
to pot. i've not seen it, but i'm no less
saddened by it.

Got the chance to visit the archery museum at bass pro a few months ago while I was in Missouri. It is defiantly something a true trad nut needs to see. Lots of very nice old bows from earl hours collection in there as well as a lot of good trad history.

I'm jealous. I never see any nice traditional archery tackle at the local shop, in fact the coolest thing I ever see there is usually one or more of my rifles as I am taking them out of pawn  :-[
