Heard a strange grunt, growl, woof ?????
« on: March 30, 2013, 12:54:23 PM »
Took my son turkey hunting this morning (we're in southern Illinois) as we're rounding a point of woods in the pasture something along the edge gave us three grunts, growl, woofs? I don't know? It started to sound like a pig grunt with kind of a growl too it but ended with a woof sound maybe a second and a half to 2 seconds long? I've never heard anything like it.It didn't sound like a k9 or cat. Never heard it run of or any other sounds. We went to our spot about 100 yds away and set up then heard a gobble way on the other side of the farm so we both agreed to get out of there and go after that bird. :) We returned later in the morning to look to see if maybe there was something dead that it would have been feeding on but found nothing no tracts nothing?

if it didn't throw fist-size or
bigger rocks at you, i'd say
feral hog. they can make some
noises in the bush that are
really spooky.

i'd never seen a lion around here
until i bought my place. see at
least one (or the same one ?)
every year. seen my first badger
and woodcock here too. didn't
have the slightest idea those things
were in this part of the world.
hogs are very nomadic, and tend
to be nocturnal.
one of the cats i've seen was the
night before opening day of bow
season year before last. i went
outside to my truck and one was on
the far side of the porch. it didn't
growl or howl, it hissed very loud.
the only thing to compare would
be if you've ever opened the condensation
drain on a very large air compressor.
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! ! ! ! ! ! !

you might have heard an immature bigfoot,
although i don't know what one might sound like
or even a mature one for that matter.
never heard one, only seen.

Just checked you tube for sounds of a feral hog and found a sound that's real close to what we heard. Guess we may have to go back next weekend and do some hog hunting.  :)  we are just off the Shawnee forest so there is plenty of woods to hide a hog.

I've heard and seen thousands of feral hogs; never heard one make anything like a growling sound. I've heard Bigfoot in a lot of southeastern states that made sounds like you described plus a dozen or more different types of sounds.

Just so you know, there have been over 200 Bigfoot sighting reports sent to the BFRO by Illinois residents. Counties in southeastern Illinois, in or around the Shawnee NF that have generated such reports - with the number of reporte from that county - are:Saline (4), Hardin (3), Williamson (4), Johnson (1), and Pope (1). (None from Gallatin.)

What you heard may have been Bigfoot. The area is ideal habitat.
Regards.

i've heard a hog growl.
my bud jumped up a sow with babies
a short way from where i was, but i couldn't
see them because of the thick brush
in that river bottom. it sounded just
like a large dog growling, then it popped
it's teeth a couple of times like a
javelina does. they mostly grunt and
squeal.

maybe i've heard a bigfoot before and didn't
know it.

Could it have been a couple of liberals who fell out of a dumpster and got lost and were rootin' around for someting to eat, or something that washed down from chicago?

I don't think they would make it long in this area.  ;)   ;D

A guy from work swears he seen a mama bear and 2 cubs near there about 5 years ago.

There have been reports of wild hogs in Southern Illinois for at least 4 or 5 years now.  And, unlike the bigfoots, there have been a few hogs actually shot.    ::)

After Thanksgiving Dinner, my sisters butt would make an assortment of strange, smelly grunt and growling sounds.  :o

Umm I think there are, otherwise IDNR would not have this page on their site:
http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/OI/Pages/BAFeralHogsinIllinois.aspx

Also there is this:
http://www.mnn.com/local-reports/illinois/local-blog/illinois-hunters-asked-to-keep-eyes-peeled-for-wild-boar

There are some feral hogs in in nearly every state.
keep em talkin' while I reload

While riding our streetlegal dirtbikes in the green mountains of VT we came across a wild blueberry patch and stopped to pick and eat some.  A few minutes later we were growled at so we flew out of there. We never seen what it was but it was a low pitched deep growl.  Were in the heart of the best blackbear country in the state too.
