I agree.  I think all three of my Shikaris are cool, 44M, 45-70 & 50-70. 8)

I wish it were D&T for a scope.  My eyes aren't that good.

I recently purchased a Buff Classic, but really deep down inside wanted a Shakari. Something about that cleaning rod under the barrel, that looks good to my eye. Very nostalgic looking rifle. I was born a bit too late to buy one new, and I haven't found any good deals on used ones, so the Buffalo Classic will have fill my big bore niche.

  I had a Shikari 44M..  darn nice rifle.  I collected 4 deer with it..then gave it to my #3 grandson..who got 3-4 more deer with it!
 One thing to watch during use though.. that cleaning rod has a ball-detent to hold the rod in place.. if you don't have it turned rightly..it will work it's way out of the gun within 2-3 shots.. :)   Nice rifle though..and some history in our family..

IIRC, they have the lower hammer and no T-Bar too.
Swamp, ya shoulda bought it  ;) ; my eyes ain't all that good anymore either, but I still am surprised from time to time by how well I can do with irons.......remember, use it or lose it!

All H&Rs were changed to transfer bars by 1978, the Shikari was made until 1981, so they aren't all t-bar free.  ;)

  I don't know if you tried it or not..but I have the same problem.  I have found that a peep sight or the Hi-Vis type sights can get me to where I can use "irons" again..

I have shot some Hi-Viz on friend's and am thinking of doing so on 'one' of mine (oh, which one?....decisions, decisions...). Ive been using peeps for some years too but grab a plain, open sighted gun fairly regularly (I have bi-focals) and like 'a lot of light' showing in that rear notch for windage. Leveling the tops out is the big issue anymore. Just the other day I used a 3-dot handgun and when I lined the dot up I made decent hits (duh), but if I tried to use the opens conventionally, not so good......

I never was any good with iron sights.  I decided to try a peep on my 94 Winnie because I couldn't bare to scope it.  Now I wish I had tried peeps 25 years sooner. 

BTW, I'm 56 and I've always worn glasses but now I'm to the point where I need bifocals to see anything close up.  I'm supposed to wear trifocals but I couldn't get used to the damn things.

I've been wearing glasses since I was 10, been wearing progressive trifocals for about 20yrs, I had no problems getting used to them, they don't help using open sights, but a peep sight works just fine, but I still prefer optics, we have antler restrictions on all of our buck deer hunting and some antlerless hunts where shooting a spike accidentally isn't an option, so scopes are the way to go if I have a choice. All my muzzleloaders have peep sights on em, even my flintlock, glass sights are not allowed in ML seasons.

Adding a peep to the Shakari would require drilled and tapped holes I believe.  That would add another $100.00 to the cost plus the price of the peep sight.

If you have access to a drill press then a home D/T on a Handi is a piece of cake.  It is covered in the FAQs and I have done several w/o an issue.  You can get the pilot drill and tap from Brownells or Midway.   When you are done you can sell the drill and tap and recover some of you cash or keep them for when you decide D/T your 44M Shikari. ;D

The ball-detent keeps the cleaning rod from rattling not to keep the rod in.
The cleaning rod needs to be put in and then turned 90 degrees to lock it in place. Turning the rod 90 degrees locks it in place and it wont work its way out.
