45-70.gov,
Speaking of cutting barrels!
I also have one of the old Marlin bolt action 10 gauges! I think the barrel on it is 32" maybe longer! :-\ :-\
I have thought about cutting it back to maybe 22" - 24" for a varmint shotgun. Several people have voiced their opinion that to shorten the barrel , I believe they said, that it would cause the gun to shoot high! I would think if you shortened the barrel , naturally you would remove any choke in the barrel. You would be left essentially with a cylinder bore. I was thinking that if it did shoot high or whatever, you could always have it drilled out for screw in chokes!! Any ideas?? Heck if this would work, might have CW take a look at the stock and see if he could do his magic on the " Old Goose Gun" !!

Streak,
You would be suprised at what a cylinder bore will do and how far it will reach.  I had a cut down 1100 that I guess was once a 30" was cut to 25" and I was using standard trap loads and breaking birds from the 30 yard line on the trap field.
I have been the one saying chopping down a long barrel to a short one will cause the barrel to shoot high.
If you look at a a plain barreled shot gun there is a little bit of a sway to the barrel where the chamber is thick and the muzzle is thin.
If you take a piece of string and make a strait line, and aligh the shotgun on the string.  You cna put tape on the barrel at different places you are thinking of cutting the barrel and then put it and the rear of the gun on the string you will see the barrel is going to be higher than the string showing that the shot stream will go high.
An easy fix is to just add rifle sights to the gun.

My old 12ga. Buck barrel is 24" cyl. bore with sights and shoots shot to reasonable ranges so well that the bird barrel hasnt been back on the frame in 2yrs.
I dont use the sights for shot, just normal pull up & shoot.

i spent  my $200 on an old  o/u  12ga
the OObuck  carried by our PD  actually got a slightly tighter pattern at  9''
it started  as a chopped 18 inch  with no choke  ..gotten cheap at a pawn shop
small  shot  opens  up  much more
our ''theory''  is the short  barrel  lost  lots  of velocity
the loss  of velocity  cut down  on the ari that dispersed the  buck shot
re  cut  2  inches at a time and  measured pattern on  both barrels

So just how big is that pattern at 10-20 feet from a 9" with buck and birdshot?

stretching the limits of my memory  here

pattern   went from  8  to 6 inches......deceasing progresively as we cut
the distance  is what   i have trouble recalling....thinking  10 yards  ..or 30 feet...across the room

bird shot  was  over a foot...........slugs  seem to point well...thinking about a red dot  on a picatiny rail

That 'across the room' thing is kinda what I was thinking. WOW, thats MEAN with either buck or bird shot. Guess all those movies with those short ugly things arent off.......sounds like a heck of a grouse gun.
