284 Winchester
« on: March 30, 2013, 03:16:55 PM »
I'm loading a couple hundred of these for a 88 Winchester. I have IMR 4350 & Nosler 150 Ballistic Tips. Load data from IMR & Nosler is a mile apart. Anyone load for one of these?

I did years back. I looked at the Nosler data and it appears to to be extremely conservative. If you have a Sierra manual, they don't list a 150 but they do list a 140 and a 160gr bullet and the test firearm IS a Winchester Model 88, 22" barrel, 1:10' twist which should be your rifle. They list as a max load for the 140gr flat based bullet using IMR4350 as 54.9grs of powder. Velocity at 2900'ps. For the 160 grs boat tail bullet a max load of IMR4350 at 52.4grs. Speed at 2700'ps. Max loads should be some where in between but I'd start looking for pressure at the max loads per Nosler and go up if necessary a half grain at a time looking for accuracy and pressure.
If you read the test firearm for the Nosler data, it has a custom barrel of 24" and a 1:9" twist. The twist rate being faster will build pressure quicker than your rifle. Frankly, unless you have the same Lilja barrel, the data is worthless at Nosler. This is why you have to read the test firearm first........like I should have before I started this post. But as always, start low and work up. I don't have the data I developed for the Model 88 I had so I can't relate any to you but I never shot a 150 anyway. The Sierra 140 for my hunting conditions would do anything I needed and then some. Maybe someone with Quickloads can run it for you using the 150 bullet and give you more exacts.

In my Ruger 77 the published WW load of 150 gr Power Point and 54.0 gr of W-760 gives outstanding accuracy.

I always use the powder manufacture for load data.

Hodgdon shows the following for 284 Winchester using a 150 grain bullet with IMR 4350 powder.

Starting 50.6 grains
Maximum 55.0 grains

Visit this link for data.

I spoke to them on the phone yesterday. The bullet I'm using is different than the one they used but he seemed to think their data would be fine. BTW, Nosler's max load is less than IMR's beginning load.

You did the right thing, I trust the powder manufacture data over all others.

Yes, I saw that Nosler's data was very conservative.

You always have to look at what's use to test the loads vs model 88.  Both Hodgdon and Nosler are using 24" long barrels and Nolser is a Lilja and it is a 1/9 twist vs 1/10 for the model 88 and Hodgdon data.  If you go back to some of the older manual that actually loaded for the model 88 with 150gr bullet a max velocity was in the high 2700fps which is more in line with Nosler data.  Factory 284 ammo was just made to cycle the Win 100 auto.

If it was me I'd load light and work up and stay in the 2700fps range with 150gr bullets vs shooting bolt action 284.

As a general principle of reloading I figure that if I need to load to a max charge I'm not using enough cartridge for the job.

Loaded a few with 52 grains of IMR 4350 with an OAL of 2.800". They functioned well & here's the fired cases.

After much thought I decided to load these with 51.5 grains of the IMR 4350.
