Gunsafe moisture problem
« on: April 01, 2013, 09:02:48 AM »
Continuation of my spill problem wherein the gunsocks got wet.

Apparently the floor pad absorbed a fair share of moisture and now all my rifles have patina of rust on the rings and the occasional barrel or trigger guard.

Aside from removing the offending floor pad and installing a good dehumidifier rod what else can I do.

Does frog skin or similar lubs work well in high humidity environments?  Suggestions???

When I store guns in a humid environment, I give them a good spraying with "Sheath" protectant.  It leaves a film on the metal that really prevents rust, and does not harm wood or plastic.  Wipes off easy with a rag and a little solvent.

Do you have something making heat inside of the safe?

I use a candelabra bulb in the safe.

There is also the Goldenrod safe heater/dehumidifier.

It keeps the moisture down and the guns a little warmer so that when you open the door or take a gun out moisture does not condense on a cold gun.

Be careful with big desiccant do dads my son used them and did not dry them the collected enough moisture to leak and ruin the finish on several guns . make sure to follow directions.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I had a similar spill and cleaned it up with clean warm water as per the DriZair website.  I took all the guns out and brought them into the living room to be cleaned and oiled.  While that was going on I put a small ceramic electric heater in the safe and left the door only open far enough for the cord.  I was thinking that would be enough space to let the moisture out.  I left it that way for a couple days.

As per Ed (C.E.) Harris' advise, I only use automatic transmission fluid for gun oil.  I have not had a spec of rust on my guns since I started oiling them with ATF.  I also only clean them with Ed's Red also from Ed Harris.

I wasn't using the DryZair correctly and now I have the container at the back corner of my safe and I check it often.  Fortunately none of my rifles were damaged by the butt stocks sitting in the puddle...

geezerbiker--ATF works great and synthetic wheel bearing grease in those places where high pressure lube is needed or lube that needs to stay put is mandatory.. The moly bearing variety is what I use and sometimes even add moly to enhance a bit. The moisture absorbing devices I've seen contain a salt material. That means one must use a water based material for cleanup, much like blackpowder fouling. I use an ammonia based window cleaner for cleanup. Use the cheapest available and avoid any with added scents..you don't want the added materials.

When I lived in Northern Ca righ on the coast and we had multiple days of a deep fog in the house, I bought a pair of the Remington Safe dryers.  The are a desicant thing you plug in and it drys out the safe.  I ended up buying more of them and kept a rolling exchange of them from closet to outlet and outlet to closet a few days later.
I also found the Boeshield T-9 works really well.  I spray it on a rag and wipe the guns down with them.  T-9 is a spray wax that was designed for the leading edges of planes to stop icing (the build up of moisture on the leading edge of a plane that freezes.  So the stuff is tough.  You can get it as boating shops or at local airports.

It's nothing a permanent 40w light bulb won't cure, and WAY cheaper (and better) than those rods.

We have 95* and 95% here in NC in summertime.

Just make sure when you wipe down, to store muzzle down, so gravity pulls it outta barrel and away from wood.

The internals or wood-to-metal areas get the oils and gum up or soften wood fibers.

Put an old sock/rag to absorb.
