Ruger 77/44 Scope or Not to Scope.

I can't make up my mind if I want a scope on this thing.  It handles so nicely without a scope and the irons are adequate.

I put a Leupold 4X fixed on mine and after a trip to the range might just pull the 4X and put one of my favorite HUNTING scopes on, a Leupold 2.5x-8x VxIII.
I think I might need the 8X for better target work at 100 yards. If just for hunting deer/coyotes then the 4X is fine. Nice to have the open sights for backup.

I have the semi auto version (the 99/44) and wresled with the same problem.  I cna still see well enough to use the Iron sights. and like the clean lines of the open sights.  I have other rifles to shoot with scopes.  The short handy big bore is easy to carry and fast in the thick woods where it shines.
I did look at scoping mine with a 1-4X24 trijicon for the low light, but I was not willing to spend that kind of $ to see if it worked.

I'd sure like to try the peep sight made just for the Ruger scope ring base groove. I'm near sighted and a peep is ok for close range but nothing beats a scope IMO.

I've had good results with peeps on rifles that I don't want to scope.  I never did well with iron sights and I plan to only have peeps on scopes on any rifle I own...

I had put a compact bushnell scope on mine, and it couldnt take the recoil i guess, no matter how well it was mounted, my point of impact would change, sometimes dramatically. I took it off my ruger and put it on my muzzleoader, and no problems since.
I got a skinner peep sight and put it on my 77/44, and have never looked back! It looks good, the rifle carries better, weighs less and it is quicker (for me) to find the target than with a scope. It does the job WELL at woods ranges. Shot my biggest buck yet with it this past fall at about 80 yards.
You may want to look into it, I think mine was about 65.00 with shipping. well worth the money as far as I am concerned.
