Barrel work?
« on: April 01, 2013, 07:31:40 PM »
Project #1.
Anyone have a contact of anyone that could reline a .44 Mag barrel to .45 LC using a barrel liner such as you can get from Track of the Wolf?

http://www.trackofthewolf.com/list/Item.aspx/637/2

It looks like it would be easier(cheaper too) to go this route than try to find an original Handi in .45 LC.

Thanks,

Am I missing something here?
Why would you need to put a liner of 45 cal in a barrel that you have to rebore?
Why not just rebore and rechamber the 44 to 45 and be done with it?
What advantage does reboreing larger and installing a liner have over just a simple rebore and rechamber?
It surely can't be cost.
Both would be the same and you have to buy the liner and have it installed.
45 Colt Handis are hard to get for sure but they are out there and for the price of the work you are talking I would think you could find one.

I was wondering that also...

a rebore may cost a bit more, but is stronger in the long run, NO???

IIRC Lined barrels can't handle real heavy loads, and may pose an issue if you want to ream to longer, later.

Rebores have a minimum bore difference to clean up the old lands and grooves, .431 to .452" would be questionable.

A lot more work involved in boring, honing and re-rifling,chambering, than just rough boring and soldering, glueing in a liner and chambering..They can't jist bore one and rifle it,would be a very, very poor outcome ::)

I would think a stub job would be the most reasonable cost and you could get an option of barrel length.

Thanks Tim.
I understand about the small difference in bores and cleanup.

Got a quick response from Wayne in about an hour.  :)

We would have to reline to 45 LC because our rebores are .458.  The LC is 452.   The cost for a reline is $375, plus shipping.  Turnaround time is running about 14 weeks.
