Cannon test firing pieces

We have a number of these test pieces at the fort which are from 10" wrought steel that have had cannon fired against them, just goes to show the power of some of these cannon.
 

 

 

 

 

 
The last one still has the cannon ball imbedded!!!!!

Lordy...the spalling off of that plate is amazing.  Imagine having all that zinging around inside a turret.  "It slices, it dices."

Spectacular photos, thanks for posting. It is quite impressive to see what a spherical projectile was capable of on such thick armour, it would be interesting to know if the stuck projectile is made of steel or chilled cast iron, both were introduced (steel being superseded by chilled iron) for the larger natures in an effort to combat armour plating. Do you know the diameter of that shot?

Also, from what range were the test targets fired at?  Representative battle ranges or short ranges to maximize effect?

Sorry mate I have no idea of the range these were fired from as we have these on permanate loan from the Army.
