What to do while watching TV
« on: April 03, 2013, 05:09:23 AM »
Watching TV in this day and age is a waste of time.  So, I don't watch anything unless it is educational or an old classic movie or something like that.  I set up a small folding table and while watching TV I sharpen knives and cutting tools.  I clean primer pockets on brass.  I can clean a gun.  I do not reload because I don't want any distractions.  I have sorted range pickups by brand and size.  My grandmother did crochet and nitting, sewed buttons or patches on clothes, or shelled peas, snapped beans, or such.  This keeps it from being a total waste of time.  I also ride and exercise bike or walk a treadmill while watching.  Anyone else do things to keep this from being a total waste of time?

I do watch Doomsday Preppers to gleen some good out of it.  Some stuff is hokey.  I also watch Dual Survival and when it was on, watched Man-Woman Wild.  I watched an old special on NG or Discovery about EMP's from either a giant solar flare or nuke over Kansas which could knock out the power over the whole country.  One thing about that was they tested 36 vehicles for EMP blast and only about half would still work, but they didn't tell which brands could survive an EMP blast.

Now that spring has kind of sprung, hi yesterday and today mid 30's >:( , I get outside and piddle fart around. Last weekend it was up in the hi 70's and low 80's.  :o  I got out under my leanto and cast bullets. Very relaxing. I also tried to sight in a ruger air rifle with no success. It kept changing point of aim. Think I'll chunk the scope and just use the sights.  :-\ Watching TV just ends up being a waste of time for me.

I turn on Fox news in the morning and watch with my morning coffee and breakfast to get caught up on anything new.  Not much during the day, other than to check the news or weather once in a while.

In the evenings it's almost always history, discovery, NG, or the military channels - can't stand the stupid stuff on the network channels.  Almost always puttering around with something else while watching (no reloading though!).  Usually the NASCAR races on the weekend, but if it's nice I'll go fishing or work in the yard instead.

Of course, the nicer the weather and/or the more hunting seasons are open the less time I waste in front of the TV.

When we were young, my grandmother would only let us watch TV on Saturday morning if we would shake mason jars with butter fat to make butter.

Dont watch much during the day. but thinking of getting a milk cow lately and  if I do my grandkids and I will be shaking jars on Saturday mornings  ;)

Now I do watch alaska state troopers when ever its on.  Speaking of wasting time, I gotta get off here and go to Church.

+1 on the finger lubing bullets. I've also paper patched many a piece of lead while watching TV. Otherwise we just don't watch TV much. In the daytime I'm doing stuff, and night is for relaxing with a little beer and watching TV shows. Don't have cable so I never just waste time with it and what we watch are shows that we want to

I read these while the tv is on.  I change batteries in the flashlights, GPS, range finder getting ready for a trip.
Will also shine shoes / Boots My danners get a new coat of wax just before the start of hunting season.  They look good until the first Quail hunt.  I was told in Military shcool the original use for shining shoes was to protect the leather and make them water resistant.
I reload and sharpen knives to book on tape / CD
And clean gun to them as well.  Some times I will drag a lap top out and watch a favorite movie or TV series getting ready for the next season.
Years ago I used to watch TV laying on the floor and every 5 min I would do 5 to 10 push ups getting in shape.  Helped to loose 45 pounds.

I forgot about shining shoes while watching TV.  It is getting into spring and now we are outside more and will watch TV less.  We record the most favorite shows if they are on early and watch them later before bed and/or on rainy nights and evenings.  Our pool will be open in a week or so when the daytime temps get up in the 80's.  My wife almost exclusively exercises while watching TV.  We have converted one bedroom into an exercise/TV room.  We have a treadmill and exercise bike.  We also have two chairs in there.  I have a small folding table that I use to clean guns, prep brass, shine shoes, and sharpen knives.  Just trying to find out other things people do that I might could try since watching TV is really a waste of time.

My Step mother set up a roll around reloading table with 20 ga on one side and 12 ga on the other and would crank out shotgun shells while watching movies.  Then Dad screwed up and bought her a loom, and now she weaves instead of reloads.  Or she will knit.  At Christmas I had he make me a soft wool turtle neck as a round scarf and worked well for hunting ducks in cold weather.

I found that reloading shotgun shells for #8 shot in 12 ga to cost about $42 a case, me providing the shells.  Walmart sells the cheap #8 shot from Winchester for $48 a case.  That was last year, so I would rather pay the $6 more per case and use my time reloading rifle and pistol which is more cost effective to me.  I only hunt southern squirrels, rabbits, quail, and dove with shotgun.  #8 handles all these for me.  If I turkey hunt, I buy the Heavi shot and don't shoot it much.  I shoot far more sporting clays than any animal also, so the #8 shot is all I buy.  I have bought specialty shells, some buckshot, and slugs, but they are for SHTF.  Anyways, I like to concentrate when reloading to keep from making mistakes so I don't watch TV when putting the powder in and seating the bullets.  Just cleaning primer pockets or deburring.

I do Sudoku puzzles while listening to the tube.  Sometimes after a long day of paddling, or peddling, that doesn't last too long.  The next thing I hear is my wife yelling at me to go to bed, before I break my neck.

Oh come on now, if you get the channels there is quite a bit worth watching that fits well while doing another task.

Pickers
Pawn Shop
Duck Dynasty
Storage Wars
Restaurant Impossible
Two shows that set up cameras to see how nasty employees are.
Hardcore Pawn
Duck Dynasty
Hoarders
A new one where people have whack-job obsessions.
Duck Dynasty
Hell's Kitchen
Axe Men
Swamp People
Duck Dynasty

They are all good or good back-ground shows while doing something else.

OK add to that Dexter, Game of Thrones, Bones, Elementry, Body of Proof, Castle, American Top Gear, Bizar foods America, Top Shot  and Vikings.
OH have to exclude Pawn Stars, I hate the arrogant fat kid.   No horders, I dont need much to be sent down that road.

I do on occasion get into watching situation drama marathons (that is the nice thing about cable channels that have marathons. If you have the time you get a lot of what you missed in one sitting.)
Sadly, or expected, our cable company is taking more and more items off of basic cable and making it so you have to rent a box for every TV in the house to watch a lot of channels now.

I used to go to one TV while the woman watched the other but now the living room TV is the only one with a box so a lot of shows I used to watch are no longer watched.

A good one to watch if you get it on your local PBS station is Last of Summer Wine, especially the original characters.
It is a bunch of old geezers treating the golden years as if they were still youts.
The Woodwright's Shop and America's Heartland are other great PBS show but what really pees me off about PBS is they move shows all over the damn place instead of leaving them in one spot so a person can plan a time to watch. (OR they put them on a cable package channel that costs a lot more to watch.)

We used to get local channels that had varied type shows, especially on weekends, on gardening, fishing, hobbies, cars, planes etc. but they have all been sucked up and killed by others with more money that put on nothing but paid commercials hour after hour.
