Tennessee girl suspended from school 24 times for ‘foul odor’

FoxNews.com   An eight-year-old Tennessee girl has been sent home from school 24 times this school year because of what her mother describes as her foul odor.
The second-grader's mother, Krystal Hensley, told WJHL.com that officials at the unidentified Washington County school continue to send her daughter home despite attempts to correct the problem.
 
"She's been to the doctor and it's not a medical problem. They send her home at least once a month. You go to school to learn, not to be sent home," Hensley told the station.
Other students and teachers at the school have complained of the smell, saying they are unable to focus on school activities, according to a suspension notice Hensley provided to WJHL.com.
The school has warned that the suspensions will continue if "corrective measures" are not taken, according to the report.
Ron Dykes, director of schools at Washington County School District, told WJHL.com that a child is only sent home when a family refuses to use proper hygiene or the child is not required to use proper hygiene.
 
"In those cases, they are very extreme and to be quite frank the odor is so overpowering and extremely offensive to other children and adults so some sort of home bound program is used or the child will be removed temporarily from the school until the family complies," Dykes told the station.
Dykes declined to comment directly on Hensley's daughter's case, the station reported.

I feel bad for the kid... You can't pick your parents... Maybe there's a shower at the school or something?

I have worked with kids that stunk and they and the parents claim they shower daily. We then have these kids shower at school and sure enough their idea of a shower is to step in and out of the spray, no soaping up or scrubbing up. Special education or not it is a shame when a high school kid does not know how to actually clean themselves. Sounds like the parent(s) may need some lessons themselves. Not having clean clothes/bedding is another big reason.

Throw the kid clothes and all in the washer with a load of Fabreeze. That should take care of the problem.

I worked const with a guy who stank when he came to work and of course it got worse, one day I had to work with him inside a ceiling. We bought a can of rt guard and tackled all 350 lb of him and emptied the can on him. He never stunk again. POWDERMAN.

I can't imagine a school that does not have shower facilities. I mean they have gym & sports programs so they half to have showers.

I believe the comment that its not the schools responsibility is a upper class view that has lost touch with real life. No some homes in poor area don't have showers at least that work. That's why schools in those areas give a breakfast too. Hunger may not be a reality in your neighborhood but it is in many places.

Poor child. she must really smell bad. At eight years old all boys used to smell bad, but we didn't have AC then. The girls pobably did as well but who went near a girl when you were eight.  I Remember a spanish teacher used to come to my 6th grade class(still no a/c) and remarked that we all needed to start using deoderant. So a lot of us did after that. But heh we all stank stunk smelled bad.     
 
I hope she gets some help, maybe a teacher could pull her aside and give her some tips and a roll on!

351POWER. HEH, I'm too old to be tackling a guy that size anymore. It took 4 or 5 of us to get him down but enough was enough.
When I was a kid I went to school with some really poor kids. The Mom had a couple of them at the drs office and they smelled pretty bad, where the boys leaned their heads against the wall there was a greasy spot. After their exam the dr gave the mother several bars of soap and told her, It's no sin to be poor, but theres no excuse not to be clean, cleanliness is next to Godliness.  They learned a lesson that day and even their clothes were a lot cleaner at school. POWDERMAN.

Back about 8 years ago I worked with a guy that lived over a bar and was a drunk. He would come into work sometimes smelling so bad you could not stand to be around him. I remember one day in particular. It was after lunch and we had to set a very large entrance door in a house we framed. He was on the inside of the door with me and two other guys were on the outside of the door. Anyways once we got the door in the opening and stopped the breeze from flowing through the house. He smelled so bad I started to gag. I had to walk away and puke it was so bad. I told my boss I was not going to work around him any longer. You know you smell when you can make someone puke. Dale
