Sheridan Blue STREAK & returned 'Dan rebuild
« on: April 03, 2013, 06:39:34 AM »
I received a replacement in the mail a couple day ago. A very kind member here Streak, (Sam) sent me his!! I had one as a child, growing up. Many years later, I lent it to a "friend" who has since moved away and completely dripped off the grid! Repeated eMails to last address go unanswered...

Reciently, with ammo scarcitys and increased costs, I am again interested in air power. So we have again begun shooting air guns. I bought one here off Johnny Reb, Jeff and that's a great gun! I also own a RWS 34 and a very old Crosman 760.

Any how, I wanted a Sheridan again. They are great handling and shooting rifles. This will be a complete rebuild using Tim out in California for own of his "Steroid rebuild", and I'll refinish the walnut stocks myself.

Last night I stripped the gun and cleaned all metal parts. Setting the small parts aside I would not need for a while. (Hope I don't loose them.) I'll box the metal parts up and ship them tomorrow. This weekend I'll start on the wood. I am going to install a butt plate or rifle pad.  I haven't decided but I need to do something because the stock has surface damage like it sat in a barn or damp place for a season or three. Wood finish is trashed but the wood under shows nice figure and very few dents or gouges to repair.

Here is what in starting with

I'll up date this as the re-build goes!

Again huge thanks to Streak as with out him this would not be possible!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sure enough!!

Last night I worked a bit more on the action. The oil I put on it Tuesday worked in and loosened up the inner workin's.  ;D   I was actually able to shoot it 4-5 times!!  The seals appear to be revidalized the seals enough for pressure. The last time I pumped it and let it sit for 30-40 seconds. Then shot it. It was much reduced in power. BUT this has sat, frozen for many years. So simply freeing it was unexpected!

I also decripted the SN. This is a 1965 model, making it a early "C" model.

I also made up a sturdy box, packaged the action up securely and shipped it off to Tim McMurry at Mac1 airguns for his Steriod treatment! This will be the lul before completing the project as he already told me he is busy so it would be all of 8 weeks to maybe 10 before he got to my rifle.

In the mean time I'll refinish the wood and fit a butt plate or pad.  Stay tuned for the stock work.  ::)

Today I had a couple hours to kill and fit a pad to the stock and sanded it completely with coarse paper, I began reshaping the grip with a file.

I used a Marlin rifle pad. I chopped about 1/4'' off the stock and added the pad.

Pics over the weekend of the re shaping and progress with the sanding then steel wooling.

The buttstock work looks great!
This looks like it is really going to turnout to be a great looking "revitalized" Sheridan!!
I apologize for the condition of the stock!! In those photo`s it looks like it went throught the Revolutionary War and the Civil War!! ;D ;D
But I can see already this is going to be a work of art and look forward to the next sequence of restoration!

All Sheridan Blue streaks are in 20 cal/5MM calibre. There has been a couple transitions. First when Benjamin bought the company and second when Crosman bought Benjamin. Minor changes thru the years, but not to caliber. Benjamin are offered in .177 and .22 and they share some parts and an over all look of the Sheridan confusing many folks. The deeper I get I may have to get a older Benji too... ::)

I have finished sanding the stocks. I started with 80grit to take off the remaining finish and sand out a couple imperfections. Then I went to 100, then 150 finally twice with 220g. These stocks are HARD and actually saw more material removed with the finer grits. I then took a rasp to the pistol grip. Re shaping the toe and grip cap. Mostly defining them better and then I slimmed the grip for my larger hands.

Suttle changes, but should show some of the nuances of the grain better as well as feel better in the hand.

I also finished the forend. I had a little filling to do as I did on the butt. Unfortuneately both will show as they didn't take the finish as well or the same as surronding wood did. BUT they are what I like to call ''character'' marks. ;)

Here is the butt after a wipe down with water to ''whisker'' the wood.

Here is same with fore stock

Here is both ready for finish.

I hit the pump/fore stock with DK Walnut stain. Then rubbed it hot with clean cloth to remove excess. I think its a pretty good match, at least I should be closer then it was... (Guess I forgot to snap a pic.)

Tomorrow one last rub down with 000 wool and then first coats of tongue oil.

Great job!
The rasping modification on the grip really looks neat!!
What type of "  steroid" improvements is to take place when it is being repaired??

Thank you all!!! As I understand it, he replaces the hi wearing parts with stronger forged steel parts. Replaced the seals and enforces the cylinder allowing for velocity to be improved from 650ish to 900+fps with same pellets. NOT by using LIGHTER pellets like manufacturers claim  now a days! The cylinder is improved so much so instead of 8 pumps max 15 is now max. Now, I don't really need more power,  ::) but like too much money or a woman  too pretty, why would you not want that. ;)

Here is what he sent me on my first email to him.

Quote
Hello Brian,
My conversions make for a gun that lasts a long time and has higher performance per pump than the factory item. 6 pumps will get you the same power as a factory gun @ 8. The Billet Steroid Conversion runs $165 to the current series gun which need front plug, lever link and lever as well as the rest of the Steroid Internals. Some versions do not require as many parts so they are less to convert. We use solid parts not sheet metal and no-corrode stainless on our adjustable piston. Links, Rivets, levers, pistons, pins, PTFE Inlet and Delrin Outlet are all Mac1 items.
The Extended billet option makes the gun easier to pump. That is $30 and only considered practical if you or others using gun are over 5'10". Extended is made for tall people with longer arms who will feel more comfortable with a longer lever. $30 for Extended option or the Scope groove option.
Williams Peep sight is a upgraded rear sight that is $40.
Retro Tootsie Option is $75 and includes the extended lever option. That is a way to make the modern made gun look like the 60's vintage guns where they had small round pump handles that looked like tootsie roll candy. We slim the butt stock and normally fit the Williams peep. WE call it RTXW or Retro Tootsie Extended Williams. If you have a wide face of pronounced cheek you will have difficulty getting low enough for the sights on this gun. Retro tootsie slims the stock up so it is no longer hard to get aligned with the sights.
The current Factory gun IMO has too high a Cheek piece and makes shooting it a real challenge for shooters like me that are short and with a pronounced cheekbone.  I had talked about doing the RTXW for years and finally got the project going recently.  We first showed the prototype to the purests a few years ago and they went nuts. Everyone that points it loves the feel and the lightness(5.25lbs) and the faithful styling from yesteryear that makes it a great little carry gun that packs the punch of a Steroid but looks like the old 312 Benjy your dad had.
This is not your Dads Benjy. It Rocks.

On Vintage 1989 and Before Sheridan guns needed Only a Steroid conversion ($95) and the Steel Front Plug as well to insure Future Pins are held well when the Pump cup gets renewed. The Steel Plug we make does not fit 342's as the Pin pattern doesn't match the Dans till 1989 on the first 392. 342's that are Steroid tuned usually need a Billet as the Benjy Lever was no match to the Dan of that era. They shared Pistons and valves already but they were using different pump levers till 1989. They were using Dan links and rivets already but not the lever arms and front plugs. The Plug adds $20 so the Vintage Rocker Safety and Hold down Safety Models are $115 plus shipping. Billet levers($40) and Extended Billet Levers($70) are available for pre '89 guns but are not a structural requirement, like current guns.

Peep sight install is $10 Labor on guns that do not have predrilled holes for Peep. All Pre 85 Dans & Benjy will not have predrilled holes. Peep is $40. The Pre 85 342 does not have a High enough front sight to use the Williams Peep. If the Racine made 342 has a front sight that is high enough to use the Williams peep sight, it will be factory Drilled & Tapped.
Benjamin 342's after 1978 can also be Steroid Tuned as well as Retro Tootsie converted. The Extended Billet lever is ideal for the 342 as it is a high pressure valve and not easy to pump.
Remove Butt stock and send us action Only unless the Gun is getting Extended or Retro conversions.

 Thanks for the Inquiry.

This AM I steel willed the stock back to the wood. removing all traces of the two coats i applied yesterday. Then I applied the third coat, its now drying.
I Hope to get fourth coat on late this afternoon. But the wood is looking better and better with each coat. Tomorrow ill will it back to wood again then give it another coat. At that point I will give it a couple days to "harden up" and decide if I want/need more coats. Generally I like look of a oil finish, opposed to gloss or even satin. This is brand new new can of finish, my old one was completely dried out and probably 25 years old. This new one seems glossy to me. Maybe because the stocks are so dense and right grained.

This is first thing this AM after two coats completely dried.

OK here is what I had first thing this AM. (This is with to coats) Indoor Pic

Im filling in the grain little by little... I will look tomorrow and see how I'm doing. (finish wise) Once I get the grain filled in, it will be glass smooth. Then one or two more coats and rub it down to a matte finish. Then wax and polish and its ready for the action... Outdoor pics

I ''wooled'' it down almost to wood..

I managed to get one last coat today before I had to leave. Tomorrow AM I'll start all over again.

OK I think I got it...  Today I applied the 6th and 7th coats. I WAS gonna stop at 6, but found some spots I did not like so I 0000 wool sanded it down and applied coat number 7 about 11AM. I checked it at 3 and it was good and dry. Its gonna take a couple days to get good and hard. Once it gets hard, I'll take the gloss off and see if I still like it. ;)

Here is a closeup of the grain/finish now.

That looks really nice! Are you able to find the seals and other parts for the inside?

If I was going that route YES. I have seen a couple sources. Believe it or not eBay usually has "kits" along with tools for $50 or so.

Mine is getting rebuilt and upgraded by a sheridan expert in California. MAc 1 air rifles. He calls it his Steroid upgrade. Takes a stock 675 fps 8 pump rifle and makes a 15 pump and near 1000 fps power house. He says he usually reaches the high 900 fps range. Prices run 100-170$ depending on your model and its over all condition. This does not include and refinishing or I should say no cosmetics.

He is a busy man too! He quoted me 6-8 weeks before he would start mine. I assume it will not take long once he begins.

I am another step closer to shooting the Sheridan today...  Easter had a sale over at Pyramid air, so I was looking to see what .20/5MM pellets they might have... I was quite pleased to see many choices and all in stock!!

SO, as my wife always tells me I went a bit over board... ::) ::) Its only 2000 rounds...err I mean Pellets. Does this make me a pellet horder? ;)

What type of peep sight are you putting on the Sheridan?
Should be a real shooting machine with those 5 mm pellets zipping out of there around 900-1000 fps!!

Wow CW, you are really onto something good there. An awesome combination of power and traditional 1950's looks, that stock reminds me of almost all the American rifles of that era, simply gorgeous. You've done a fine job on that stock and Tim, from everything i've heard, will do a fine job of beefing up and powering up your action. What a nice gift Streak sent you! Really look forward to watching this project come together. Jeff

Its a Williams Peep made specially for the Sheridan's and Benjamin's. Most Sheridan's, this one included will need to be drilled and taped for the site. Tim will do this too.

I had a Sheridan Blue Streak as a young boy, growing up. Many years later, I lent it to a "friend" who has since moved away and completely dripped off the grid! Occasional and repeated eMails to last address have gone unanswered...

CW

UNTIL NOW...

Well well... Last night, I'm checking emails and I see one i do not recognize. as I read thru it turns out to be from the fello who borrowed my original Sheridan back around 2003/4!!!

Says something about having moved and the rifle was in storage and apologies he forgot and lost track yada yada yada... Long email shortened; he is fairly certain he knows where the rifle is and should be able to get to it this weekend and ship it back to me next week!!!

Now after all this time, I'm not holding my breath. BUT the thought of having the old girl back is appealing to me!

I'm into the waiting game on the project Sheridan. I should see it back mid June. The stocks are "hardening" and maybe this weekend I will buff off the gloss to the matte finish I prefer. I will post pics if/when I do.

I also got a email from pyramid air saying a couple of my back ordered pellet tins have been shipped as well. Seems I'm 5MM pellet rich at the moment. :)

Your restoration is shaming me, it looks so good.  I too had a 5mm Blue Streak as a teenager. I loaned out the rifle (and other camping equimpent) when I was about 19, never to see any of it again.  However, I bought a Silver Streak in .177. The rifle  shoots well, but has 30 + years of a neglected stock.  You are motivating me.

Thanks man!!

I am chomping at the bit waiting for its return... IN JUNE!!  Its gonna be a rough month. ;)

I have also been picking up a couple different cans of pellets to try and shoot once its back! Still looking for heavy Eun Jin pellets...

Still waiting for the original Dan too... another e Mail, he is away this working, left Thursday, but is pretty sure he will be able to ship it out next week...

OK this AM I took another piece of 0000 wool to the stocks with a bit of pumice.

I also polished the trigger guard ready for a re-blue.

CW,
I have some Eun Jin heavies and would be happy to send you some if you want to try them.

Did you consider obtaining one of the pellet sampler kits from somebody like Straight Shooters?

I didn't see any Crosman Premiers in that collection; are they coming later?

My  'Dan is a stocker from 1999 or so and seems to like the JSB and the Premier best

I have not seen the Premiers offered as yet... :-[ :-[   I keep hearing good things about the JSB pellets... ALL calibers really too!

Your woodwork is looking really good. I do believe the early guns had much better wood. My first Sheridan from the mid 70's had a nice piece of luimber; my current model is just a ho-hum stock.

If I read your post right, you are having trouble finding Crosman Premiers?
If you have already found these websights, this is extra info but maybe others can use it.
They have all the pellets you could ever want and need.
Be aware, drooling is a foregone conclusion.
