Rhode Island students denied school lunch by Bethanni Williams  WHAS11.com Posted on April 4, 2013 at 8:41 AM      WHAS 11)--Students at a Rhode Island middle school were denied their lunches all because they owed money on their pre paid accounts.

Students between the ages of ten and fourteen were forced to go back to class hungry after some of them were denied lunch and others were even ordered to throw away the lunches they already ordered.

24 students in all were turned away from the lunch line and their parents were understandably upset.

The school's principal said he is shocked, and has since launched an investigation into the lunch provider.

The company's director has been put on paid administrative leave and the lunch provider has since apologized.
Mr. Charles Glenn “Charlie” Nelson, age 73, of Payneville, KY passed away Thursday, October 14, 2021 at his residence. RIP Charlie, we'll will all miss you. GB

I think there is a big difference bewteen they parents Can't pay and the parents Will not pay.
If they can't pay there are programs for that, if they can not take care of the kids or will not take care of the kids, is the whole reason we have the foster parent program and Child protective services.
And there is a difference between can't and won't.  Can't pay because of loss of job and all money is going to the houseing of the kids, or Won't pay, having different prioritys, buying cable TV rather than school lunches.
Somehow we have a society that has gone from convience to demanding.  When I was in school the hot lunch program was there to provide lunches to parents on a government subsidy like food stamps.  The cost of the lunch was offset by the convience of other parents by buying the lunch tickets.  I had a few in my desk in case I forgot my lunch or we were running late, or it was a good lunch.  Some how that program has changed from optional to manditory and the parents have stoped paying as it is manditory.
We have a scociety that now thinks everything should be free, A doctors vist was a co-pay then it was built into the cost of the insurance, then the medicine was a co pay then built into the cost of the insurance, then the cost went up and up to cover al lthe "free things" to the point that no one can afford it any more.  And now we want others to pay for everything.  As more and more gets to be free the quality fo the fee stuff goes down and down.  People used to be greatful for something now they are demanding more telling you they are not happy with the free soup but want Bobby Flay to cook for them and you should pay for the 5 star food.

Well said, and I agree, 100%
