low velocity buckshot
« on: April 04, 2013, 12:11:30 PM »
I've looked around the web, through a lyman shotshell manual and called bpi looking for a buckshot load that will give 1000-1100fps with a 1oz load of #2 buck (12 pellets) in a 2-3/4" 12ga shell but have not had any luck.  I'm well versed in reloading rifle and pistol, but not so much with shotgun.  This is to be an across-the-room spreader load. I'm not concerned with pellet deformation,  performance at 25yds or consistent pattern density.  In an ideal world,  it would produce a 12" pattern at 7-10yds, but that's asking a lot. The #2 buck stacks nicely in a bpi x-spreader wad,  4 columns of 3 if I cut the petals off.

thoughts?

Well, since my question about the bond arms snake slayer that I was thinking about buying 3 years ago is still on page 3 here,  I will assume that there isn't a lot of shotgun traffic on GBO. Oh well.

The answer to my question this time turned out to be Winchester AA Lite powder. They list 1oz loads at 970fps with pressures of just 4900psi.  I missed that when looking at load data the first time.  That will give me a nice low pressure load to start with since I'll be playing with different wad combinations.

Ian - Can't help you too much since I'm very new at shotgun reloading.  However, I'm curious about your 1 oz load of 4900 psi.  What's the powder amount for that 1 oz load.  I've always felt they pumped too much velocity in shot.  You run out of range when you run out of pattern regardless of how fast that shot is going.

go here http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp and in the shotshell section,  choose 12ga, 1oz, 2-3/4" AA case,  winchester powder.
