2013 Handi Budget Increase DENIED
« on: April 04, 2013, 12:59:01 PM »
I was passed-up again this year for promotion. :( The Army seems to have been extra stingy with promotions, most likely due to cutbacks. I learned a lot from the after action review and will be better qualified and more competitive next year.

My gun safe is full so I guess this really is a blessing in disguise.  ;D

Thanks, Dinny

It's the same here in the civilian world! Paychecks are getting smaller, but the bills are getting larger. Don't see any relief for at least the next four years! Even though times are tough, i did find it in my heart to join the wounded warrior project. Don't regret it at all. Will give up something to keep it going. Thanks for your service also.

I guess that's another example of "Military Intelligence"......give you a Bronze Star with one hand and deny you a promotion with the other.  In spite of it, if they allowed old farts, I'd be back in in a heartbeat.  I really miss it.  Dinny, hang in there, we're proud of you.

A rude welcome to the new world order.  Wish I had a say in where my taxes go, and you'd have gotten it.  Maybe though, like me, you'll find yourself beginning to consider how to move to civilian life in the coming future.  Good EMTs are hard to find I hear.  Just wondering...

I know that whatever you decide will go well for you and yours.

I have obligated myself to 8 more years of service via an indefinite reenlistment.  At that time I will be 46 y/o and have two kids who are 12 and 10 y/o. I may have to stay in even longer. EMT would be an entry level job, I would hope to be working in a hospital perhaps as a nurse or PA.

Thanks, Dinny

Sorry to hear it. Sounds like you got a plan for next review. I was in te Navy years ago and know what it feels like to not get promoted for whatever reason they decided at that time. Good luck.

Good Idea Dinny,  I got my RN after retiring from Navy.  If you go that way you can become a Nurse Practitioner.  Kind of the same thing as a PA.

I think of nurse practitioners like old country doctors.  They do everything but operate.  If every small town had one, health care in this country would way ahead.

They better hope not. Have you seen the size of my fingers?! Several people have said that I have starfish fingers, one even said shaking my hand was like grasping a bundle of bananas.  ;D Many years ago I was an infantry medic and my PA was upset at the number of soldiers coming to sickcall on the days we had a long run scheduled for PT. He grabbed me by the hand and had me walk into the waiting area. He told all the sickly soldiers that I would perform a rectal exam on every single patient before he would see them. That in itself reduced sickcall by 70%. Word traveled fast. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Recruiting is second on my branch negotiation list. I'm trying to get a medical oc/t job instead. DS school is easy, keeping your hat and badge for 3 years is the hard part. ;)

The country is shifting to "peace time" mode, with our Mid-East adventures winding down.  Historically, times of peace are also times of no promotions - you have to wait until someone up high dies or retires, then people battle over that position until it is filled, then the position of the person who got it needs to be filled, and so on down the line.  Add to that that there will be reductions in strength.  That open ended reenlistment might not be all that open ended!  I wish you success in your career, though!

Dinny:  Major cutbacks are coming up real fast.  This sequestration has nothing to do with it, the cutbacks were scheduled before.  The AF and Navy are being hit the hardest, yet the Army is still being hit hard.  They hit DOD civilians two years ago, now they are hitting the Military.  My oldest is in the Navy (A Sea Bee) he was told to take a remote, or get out.  He's going remote, he has four years to retirement.

When I first retired, I told the wife that my retirement check was my MAD money.  That went over like a lead brick.  But once she retired, she came around.  What she does with her retirement (expensive sports car) is her business.  What I do with mine is my business.  (guns, reloading equipment, what ever.)

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I continually tell my soldiers that the need to be reduction-in-force (RIF) proof. Now is not the time to test the patience of one's leader.  I'm afraid to be late to work and face a possible dismissal.

Thanks, Dinny
