45-120 buffalo classic question

Got this mold coming for my 45-120. Is it possible i will have to throat it to save case capacity. Looking to get about 1800-2000 fps without having pressure issues from having to seat it to deep.

I do not have access to my loading books, but I am thinking you can get around 1800 fps with a 500 grain bullet out of a 45-70. If that is true, surely you can do at least the same with a 45-120, even if the bullet is set deep. It also looks like a bore rider out in the nose area so you could set the bullet out to the first small step to the lands and then have the nose riding in the bore. It is .450" at the nose and the groove diameter for a 45-70 is .458".

Easy, Hodgdon shows 45-120 1800fps data with a 500gr Lyman w/COL 3.390" at just 28.5kpsi.

Its all going to depend on the throat of your rifle and the real ojive of that projectile. I do suspect that if you seat it a bit deeper into that 45-120 case you still wont have any overpressure issues at those velocities. As to you actually liking the load...........priceless! I eagerly await your trials report  :o .

Well I shot it today with this bullet and 61 grains varget. Book load says 1716 fps. Seems pretty wimpy. I thought there would be a little more recoil than there was.

No throating required it seems?
Now that you have your 'base load' its time to up the ante.......Id say that you should be able to get into the old British BPE/Nitro for BP range of 2000+. Of course, you will only have rampaging Buicks to try it on.......

 I have a Shilo Sharps 32 in in 45-120.
 With a full case of BP substitute and a 500 gr bullet [seated normal] it will step you back a step and is a chore to shoot.
 AND IT WEIGHTS A TON.
 You can get 1800 to 2000 easy and go after T-rex if you want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats still a light load compared to the classic British sporting cartridges.

Or a 50-140 smokeless H&R Buffalo Classic  570gr @ 2200fps, about the same as a 500NE!   ;D

I shot something like that from an 1875(?) repro Sharps and the world hesitated a bit in rotation and my universe changed  :o .
It was (wisely) offhand and I did hit the hanging buffalo steel at 100yd.  ;D (which busted it off one chain), so I did not need to shoot another.

 ;D ;D ;D  The 45-120 BC is no slouch loaded with smokeless as several others here have learned,  BB, Tyler and NFG come to mind up front, but there are others, and Richard for sure, but I don't recollect his loads.
