Rifle Pinstriping? Is it ok or a bad idea

I would like to customize a 22 Henry for my sons first rifle.  I know a professional Pinstriper that said he could do it and I just wanted to see what peoples thoughts are on if they think its a good idea and if it would hold up.

myself, i would not.
but that doesn't mean you should not.
i've seen every kind of everything done
to firearms except that i guess.
can't hurt anything, i would think.

If I have it done I was thinking on the stock and receiver cover and then have them clear coated for protection.  I guess if i did and it didnt work then I could just get a new stock and refinish the cover.

Unless you are concerned with retail value, I would "customize" it as I saw fit.  A rifle is a personal thing that you should have pride in, and should reflect your personal sense of aesthetics.  Its no different then retired cops who have a set of badges inlaid in their revolver grips, or match shooters who use red white and blue laminated stocks on their favorite rifles.

with my son's name or initials,
something like " presented to
sniper junior-from his father
sniper6582 on so-and-so date " etc.
then have a stock maker ( i'm
writing this assuming it's a wooden
stock-it is a wooden stock right?)
carefully and expertly inlet those
medallions into the stock for
presentation of the gun on whatever
day. ( a holiday or birthday would
make for a memorable day- he'd look
back and think "i remember getting
my first gun on this day" )

I wish I could do the medallion for my sons rifle but unfortunately I am one of the many people affected by the Obama plan and now my work cut me down to 24 hours a week so I dont think I could afford something like that right now.  But that is a very nice idea and I wish I could.  My sons birthday is in a few months and I want to make this rifle his own one of a kind.  The pinstriper said he could do some work on the stock and the receiver cover and then clear coat it to protect it and that he would do it for my son as a gift because he is a friend.  I wish I could had got him one the the golden boy models but I had to settle for the basic Henry 22 Lever so even if the pinstripe has problems I guess I could always just refinish the stock and cover right.

Well I ended up getting it pinstriped and it turned out great and seems to be very strong paint. I am very happy with it and I think my son will be too
