I'm all hyped up!
« on: April 06, 2013, 05:01:31 PM »
I'm all hyped up!

I picked up a gun today that I bought from an individual about a month ago.   Here is what I got:  It is an NEF with a NN serial number and is an SB2 frame.   It had three bbls. -- A .223; a .357; and a 30-30.   Had I been ordering this from the factory with three bbls, this is the three that I would have specified.   I already have ammo for all three bbls, and casting and reloading equipment for the .357, and the 30-30.   So, everything is cool in that regard.  By the way, this frame and bbls, looks almost unfired.   the barrels and frame are pristine, and there is not a scratch on the wood.

These are all factory bbls, as they all carry the last three digits of the frame serial number.   (Learned that on the forum!)   Also, the gun has a very nice, light, trigger pull.  (Probably done when other bbls. were added.   (Also, learned that on the forum!)   Don't you just love the forum?

The .357 and 30-30 are iron sights, which is fine with me and I will most likely leave them that way.   Although I'm no spring chicken, my eyes are still pretty good and I don't mind iron.   Although, I would prefer a rear peep.

The .223 bbl. came with a 6.5 - 20 X 50 Simmonds scope.   I have never owned a Simmonds but this scope looks to be of a very nice quality.    The optics are clear, it has parallex focus, and 1/4 in. click adjustments.   I think I'm going to like this scope just fine.

It was all topped off with a nice short gun case that held the frame, the forend, all three bbls, and some accessories.   I'm not going to say what I paid for all of this, but suffice it to say that you would be very pleasantly surprised if you knew!

Two months ago, I knew about NEFs and H&Rs but did not own any.    First, I bought a 12 ga. Mod. that was in really excellent condition, Then bought this rifle, but did not get it picked up until today and then bought a 20ga. as I had been looking for one ever since getting the 12ga.

Someone help me stop the maddness!   Before my wife kills me!

Not too late quite yet.  Wait til he starts talking about reaming the 357 to Maxi...  Then we'll not be able to help him.  Welcome to Handi-land.

Bucco was being mean to only offer half of what you paid to get rid of the Handi bug... no reason you should come out on the short end... I will offer all of what you paid... everyone's happy! Those are three excellent calibers for a swap barrel set.

Yep, in my book, the .223, .357, .30-30 and .45-70 will be the last 3 I ever give up due to flexibility.  I use the .223 Superlite I have now with .45 gr. HP's over 4.1 gr. Unique for my small game load.  Everything else is cake.  ;)

That set's wonderful the way it is.  As Dinny said, I would have been perfect with a .45-70 barrel too.  Do yourself a favor and get on Tim's list for the Maxi reamer.  Even if you never shoot maxis, the .38's and mags will shoot better. ;)   Our winter mess is almost over and the Maxi's gonna be the first out the door.

I swear, you guys are mind readers.   I have been doing a lot of forum reading and have become intrigued by the Maxi.   I must look into this further.    Also, I have always had 45-70 lust in my heart.    How can you not like a cartridge that is well over a hundred years old and will penetrate to the core of the planet!    My only  problem is that I would suffer a deep and lasting separation anxiety if I was to mail my gun to H&R for the new barrel.    Perhaps a whole new gun would solve that problem..... hummm.....

Thanks for the great responses!

If you like the trigger I'd consider a new rifle.  There's no guarantee it will be the same after they do the pre-barrel fitting inspection.  If the 45-70 is fairly popular in your area check out the pawn shops you might be surprised what you find.

Welcome to handi madness!

A reliable informant has told me they won't touch the trigger unless it's less than 3 lbs or the owner requests.  ;)

Get a complete 45-70; you have the 'std' Handi, the UH in ss and the BC to choose from, get one and you can then stop (laughter being heard everywhere......).

I have to admit, that the "second rifle" scenario is very attractive and every time I look at a picture of a Buffalo Classic, my "want it" gland swells up something fierce!

I don't shoot well with straight stocks but otherwise the Buffalo Classic looks intriguing.  However I think that 32" barrel is only needed with black powder.  How well does it work with smokeless loads?

Done the 22" vs 32" 45-70 comparison, add about 150fps with the extra 10" of barrel with smokeless.

They are popular for a number of reasons, but if you arent a fan of that long a barrel you can easily swap the BC wood onto a std. or UH model and get that classic 'carbine' look too. The wood turns up from time to time on our classifieds here, though you better be quick with the 'I'll take it' (snooze ya lose).
Next best is to take the std. 'palletwood' stock and do some reshaping and it helps if you start with a schnable forestock.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the early model, the H&R Shikari which came in 44Mag and 45-70!

I'll have to find a BC to handle to see how well it handles.  I'd have to change the butt stock but it's not like I find that to much trouble...

Are the BC barrels D&Ted for a scope rail?

Yes, ALL modern H&R/NEF centerfire rifles are drilled and tapped for a scope rail.

The same screw holes as the others, just the back two are used for the peep.
FWIW, Ive swapped UV , TDC and palletwood off & on to my 38-55TM and it just changes the 'flavor' kinda as you wish (custom so easy its just wrong?).

I also suppose this means none of us has anything else to do on a Sunday evening...  ;D

I don't think I can afford 2 new more rifles this year but I could get either a .45-70 ultra or BC later this summer.   The Ultra has a couple more inches on the barrel and the BC has 10 more. Which which one to choose...

Tony, think of it like this:
The std 22" is kinda like a gymnast
The BC is a long, leggy dancer
And the UH is 'juussstttt right'  ;)

That seems odd.  Normally I think of shorter barrels as being louder...

I'll hold off for awhile to see if a good deal comes down the road.  Normally I can wait but with this last one, I just had to have it...
