I cut my BC to 28", and scoped it.  Doesn't seem as ungainly or as loud [EDIT] AS MY 22".

Me too. I like it!

Thanks, Dinny

What?  Are those little sticks of dynamite laying beside that gun?  ;D  What is it chambered for?  Looks bigger than 45-70.

I like my 22 inch .45-70 the way it is, but I'm thinking of getting another one to cut to 16.5 inches....just to make it "Handier".  I don't sweat the 150 fps, velocity loss at 22 inches.  My 405 grs. running at 1950 give me all the excitement I want. :o   1800 out of a 16.5 would still be an attention getter.  It'll poke a hole in anything walking God's green North America.

One of my Springtime projects is to work out a load with a lighter bullet traveling faster, and another with the same 405 running 1300 - 1500 fps.  That's a large part of the Handiholicism.  It opens doors not available with other firearms.  For example, you can't shoot conical bullets or super hot loads in most leverguns.  In a Handi, you can push a .308 .30-30 BT bullet smack into the .308 Winchesters own turf.  I can run a .358 .356 Winchester right into Whelenland.  Ya gotta love da Handi.

Very nice find!

I hate to rain on your parade but I think your receiver is a year to old for H&R to put a CF barrel on it other than the original chambering.   Of course the FAQs and the GBO classifieds are  your friend you can also buy a second hand 45-70 barrel and fit it yourself.

rd,

Big Blue's rifle doesn't look like my 45-120, there isn't any blood on the scope! ::)

That's why I kept it a -70.  Blood degrades the lens coating.

MRB, I guess you may have figured out already that you are a ''Handi-holic.'' We don't have a 12 step program, don't want one either, we just enjoy our Handi's, thank you very much. Enjoy yourself here, lots of good info. Take care, John.
