First time out with 7.62x39

I've been searching for some time now for a 7.62x39 barrel for my handi.  I was recently tasked by my father in law to build him a rifle in this same caliber on a Savage action, and the results were much better than I expected accuracy wise and fun wise!   Since then I have really wanted a barrel for one of my handis in 7.62x39.  I recently found one and headed to the range yesterday to test it out.    I put a takeoff Simmons 3-9x40 8pt scope (not the best optics I own, but I'm not trying to win a benchrest contest with this one)  on top and did a quick boresight.   After two shots at 50yds to get close, I backed up to 100yds and fired 3 shots of the crappiest white box milsurp fmj ammo we have.   To my amazement, the three holes were 1 inch low of the bull and in a 0.8" group! :o ;D    I had full intentions of reserving this barrel for plinking with the milsurp stuff we have, but now I'm thinking about getting some dies and trying to see what kind of real potential it has.   I'm thinking a barrel that will shoot this crappy ammo sub MOA will almost surely shoot 1 holers with it's favorite hand crafted load.    We moved the scope up a few clicks and then started busting purple top turnips that were laying around in the field.   Out of 15 rounds or so, only had on FTF, and it fired on the second strike.   I think this one is going to be fun.

You may find that barrel is close to benchrest accurate. Some here have shot against much more expensive rifles and embarrassed the other shooters.

If it does turn out to be a 1-holer, that would definitely not hurt my feelings!

Hopefully, gendoc will chime in and tell us how many unbeliever's rifles he's won with his Handi 7.62x39 ;)   Of course, they're just another cheap rifle a true rifleman would be ashamed to own ::)

too many to remember.... my style is to take there high dollar shooters until tha end of tha session, then gracefully hand it back to them with a hand shake. i'm not into others pockets.... but I love to make folks understand, a rifle is only as good as one can make it. and thatsa what I been do'n for many-many years. many brands, not just these fine handi's ...no !!
 and i'm also proud of an exceptional legacy or 2 that will continue my studies. which my son has surpassed my capabilities
20 years ago. he is tha builder these days of many outstanding rifles used for reasons other than sporting. ;)
but we don't need to go there.  my "39" is kinda accurate, I've been told a few times. ;D

hey gendoc....care to share some of your favorites for the 7.62x39.   Obviously each rifle is individual, but perhaps you can share what types of bullets you've had the best luck loading up for great accuracy.

I'll give up my top three loads they are equally accurate (the proverbial and overused "cloverleaf")... they are obviously at totally different velocities;
 
-          Full; Hornady 123 SST, 30.0/H4895, Win/W-SR, 2.250”
 
-          Full; 150 NBT (.308), 28.0/H4895, Win/W-SR, 2.350”
 
-          Reduced; Hornady 123 SP, 8.0/Trail Boss, Win/W-SR, 2.250”

Yep... SST & SP's are .311... what surprised me was that the barrel spit the .308 bullets as accurately as the eleven bullets... and was very good with H4895 and hard cast 160 RN's too.

I have had good luck with Paco Kelly's recipe for 150 gr. bullets and RL 7.  I use .308 Hornaday SST's.  This load works well in my CZ and my Handi.
